hi maps team,
this really isnt a bug more like a coverage issue..
im very curious as to the reason why there isnt map coverage for the Caribbean at least for
the "big 3" of the Caribbean. (Jamaica,Barbados,Trinidad) as these countries have alot of visitors
and map data on their devices would be more than welcomed....and very useful.
With the aquisition of Navteq and TeleAtlas i thought these countries would have been included
as they were detailed maps prior to nokia's aquisition....(using other navigation applications which were powered by these two companies)
my second comment is an actually bug...
i have a full licence for "drive" yet if i choose my method as "walk" i do not get
turn by turn navigation (turn right after 20 metres)...i only get "youve reached your destination"
is there a difference to the licences? that is is there a "walk" licence, a "drive" licence and a "drive and walk" licence?
or is it an actual bug that im not getting navigation?
Maps 2 had the train stations (metro) in santiago, Maps 3 doesn't, this new version has the same issues

I can´t run Map loader with this version
Hi,
I manage to install maps, and it looks great.
Only problem I have is to calibrate magnetic compass.
I try to start application for four times. Three times I just can't calibrate compass (I was trying for 5 minutes). Only one after 3-4 minutes the compass was calibrate. But when I closed maps, and open it, the I have to calibrate again (rith no luck). The same time, the 'Compass' application from ovi shop works perfect. I can calibrate it in 'Compass' application in 5 seconds.
In addition to rdobrich's comments, the compass also does not work if you have auto rotate on - as soon as the screen rotates, the app loses compass calibration.
Hi acalonge, could you please explain a bit more detail regarding not being able to use Maploader? e.g. are there any error messages etc?
Thanks,
Kee

Hi Kee,
I dont find Voice guidance with speech engine; its still the old list! I tried the Maploader as well! but cant find "English female (UK) - with street names". Am I missing something?
The solution is:
Open file manager and go to E:/cities/diskcache/voices (delete everything in the voices folder)
Start OVI Maps and go to Settings / Navigation Voice Guidance and it should refresh. It could take a while to refresh. When it has refreshed correctly you should see "English (UK) - with street names". Doesn't actually include the word "female". The one down side is instead of getting you guidance from a nice english lady you guidance will now be provided by an english school head mistress.

I can´t get the Map Loader to work with the new application.
It says I "may be using an older version"
I tried in both, mass storage an pc suite mode over the usb cable.
I was trying to put the german map on my device again.
Hi ballreicha & acalonge,
Are you both by any chance using the Ovi lifecasting widget? if so, we have noticed in some cases that Ovi lifecasting is locking onto the e:/cities folder and therefore not allowing Map Loader to access it.
As a temporary fix, please could you try the following:
on your Homescreen click Options > Edit content > Remove the Ovi lifecasting widget > Done > Reboot phone and then try to use Map Loader.
Please let me know if this work.
Regards,
Kee

Hi Kee,
yeah, actually I have lifecasting installed and running. I will try if it works better when I have it removed and will then give you feedback.
Thanks for your response. This is so great. I must admit I don´t know a lot of companys giving that much of support and looking for users opinion. Keep up the great work!
Edit: Hey, I just downloaded the programm here at work. Ad yeah. That was a good tip. This really works. Thank you Kee
The navigation is very poor in Egypt, due to the poor quality of the intersection mapping. I guess it is not improved on 3.01, this is a problem on my previous N95 8GB as well. Today I was driving under a bridge, underneath the main road. The navigation is telling me to turn left, although there is no road. It then wanted me to turn right, to get back to the same road, presumably for a second attempt! I have previously reported intersections which the navigation does not recognise.
Comparing version 2 and version 3, the navigation was far far better. The mapping in version 2 was maybe 3 or 4 years out of date, but the navigation was dependable. With version 3, the mapping is still very old, with roads that no longer exist and new roads missing. However, the navigation can only be used as a rought guide. When re-calculating, it mostly wants to turn right and back-track to get back onto the road that I just turned off. It does not realise that turning left is a direct route! The reason for not remaining on the original road is that it no longer exists!
Today I had another case of the voice instruction saying to turn left, whilst the display is showing right (the correct direction). This is on RM-505, 11.0.021, Previously happened in different location on 3.01 with N95 8GB, telling me to turn right at a left-turn U-turn.
There are issues with map data that I reported to Navteq months ago and have not seen updated. Also a traffic light camera was seen as such in maps 3.01, but I get the full speed limit warnings with Maps 3.03

I can't set the voice navigation with street names, I've done what mbrett suggested in a previous post in this thread, and the same selections still appear, without a listing for voice navigation with street names. I've even deleted the voices folder, for it just to be re-created.

The only thing I did not state was that after deleting everything within the Voices folder was that when I restarted Maps and went to Settings / Navigation / Voice Guidance was that the list was still the old one. I then started downloading the English (UK) Female voice and part way though the download the new with street names version appeared in the list. At this point I cancelled the download of English (UK) female and started the download of the new version with street names.
Maybe it needs you to start a download to prompt the refresh. I assumed it was atime thing.
Maybe you could give this a try.

Updated to vers. 3 of Maps. When the program loads a window pops up with LAST DEVICES USED, which I presume is to connect a bluetooth GPS since the E63 is not equipped with one. When I go to hit cancel to close the window it disappears. Problem is that it keeps flashing on the screen almost every couple of seconds for the entire time that the program is running. Any ideas?
mbrett,
I tried everything you suggested and still no luck.... BUT after I gave up, and when back to it about a hour later, there was a option for it. LOL.
I'll have to try it now ;-)
This is not exactly about data - but there is one big problem. You can't just switch to Maps. You can get to the Maps only by clicking Find me. The problem is that there is a Menu button on maps. When you click it, accidentally or not, you get to the Menu, but then you can't go back to the place where you have been.
The A650 in Shipley (BD18), UK acts like a dual carrage way and won't allow a right turn on it. Its not like that on previous versions of maps, so I assume the map data is slightly wrong.
Germany, Bavaria, Munich: Frauendorferstraße 97 to end (105 i think) is inaccurate. 97 to 101 is like the same house (same gateway). 97 is directly at the street, 99 is one house behind, 101 two houses and 103 three houses.
My Problem "The A650 in Shipley (BD18), UK acts like a dual carrage way and won't allow a right turn on it. Its not like that on previous versions of maps, so I assume the map data is slightly wrong." is FIXED on the newest Maps Download.

Hello,
I'm having issues with the Map Loader telling me that I don't have a valid map drive/or need to start Maps/or need to download most recent version.
I have an updated version of everything - the Nokia Map Updater, Map Loader version 3.0.28 and the Nokia PC Suite. All were downloaded today. I have also installed v3.01 of Ovi Maps to my E63 phone.
A lot of the answers I have found in various forums say that I should go into my files and delete the "cities" file from my memory card. Thing is - I don't have a memory card. Everything is being saved on my phone memory right now and the only files i can access through the File Manager are in the C Drive and they are the "Data" files. There is no "cities" file for me to delete.
I have tried deleting the loader and updater from my computer and reinstalling. I have tried reinstalling on my phone (but cannot delete the program as far as I can tell). I ran Ovi Maps once before using the Map Loader. I am plugged in and the PC Suite reads me. Any ideas? Thanks
To vegindc: You have to have a memory card to load maps. The application is on the phone memory, but the maps must be loaded onto the memory card. That is why Map Loader is saying you don't have a valid map drive. :)

In google maps if an user enters a new location it becomes searchable almost instantly. Probably because of this google maps returns postive search results most of the time.
Though OVI maps allows us to add and categories new places. There is no way to either share the complete list(not a single place on the list but the complete list) with friends or making the newly added location searchable publicly.
Google maintains its own POI database, which was designed from the ground up to quickly accept user submissions.
Nokia uses Navteq's POI database, which is certainly NOT designed that way. You have to go to the mapreporter.navteq.com website, submit a ticket for your new POI, and wait an unknown amount of time (weeks, months) for it to be approved. Then Nokia will get those changes upon the next release of Navteq maps & database. Yes I know Nokia owns Navteq, but it is operates as its own company ... the only benefit here is that Nokia doesn't have to pay them for their quarterly (or whatever frequency) map updates.
Navteq's method is not only arduous, but virtually unknown to the end users. So we end up having to rely on whatever's already there. This can only change if either Navteq allows user submissions (don't hold your breath on that one), or the Maps team creates its own user submission POI database in addition to the default one. Then they would have to create some kind of web or on-device interface for it.
Basically, while it would be an awesome idea I don't see this happening anytime soon. Maybe in Ovi Maps 9.0 when they finally get the current bugs fixed.
Ravi
My experience with 3.0's POI data is far from what I'd expect from a Nokia product.
Seeing no "restaurant"/"food"/"cinema" icon standing in front of Warsaw's biggest mall with food court, 18-stage cinema is at least embarassing. Seeing 3.0b7 show nothing in front of 30-storey building with a restaurant at the ground floor that's there since 1975 is annoying. Finding a long-gone car repair shop is bad enough.
There are plenty of POIs missing in my home town.
POI data for 3.0 [gathered from Map Loader] for Warsaw, Poland needs much work. Funny thing, 2.0 was okay, not perfect, but good enough.

I have nokia 5800xp (31.0.008) and maps (3.23), with traffic license.
The license installed ok and downloaded the traffic data first time. Now however when i ask it to update the traffic data, it only shows the original out of date data. I have tried updating to maps beta 3.54, same problem. I have ununstalled maps reinstalled maps, hard reset the phone, reloaded map data, deleted the cache, deleted folder E:\cities\diskcache but it still downloads the old traffic data. I have emailed ovi support but just get standard computer generated replies. Can any body help?
I think it should include the option to have satellite view and terrain view, otherwise is working great in my Nokia N97.
Thank you.
I was traveling in the Ukraine and bought a 5800 XM. The maps for Canada (and Egypt and Turkey) have every road I traveled on, but Dnepropetrovsk and Kiev both basically show one highway going through without *ant* of the local roads, parks, anything. Google maps *was* worse a few month ago (didn't even have that one road) but now it has the thousands or roads and streets for these cities. Nokia might want to check with the map providers if they have any newer maps available.
Nokia uses NAVTEQ as its sole map provider. Go to http://mapreporter.navteq.com to see the roads in any given area. For example, for kiev even navteq does not have any good data, so you're out of luck. You'll have to wait until navteq updates its maps before Nokia will.
Ravi
I beelived the best option was to go to Maps on your phone and bring up the location you are interested and look for the map data provider shown on the map. This used to be the way on previous releases anyway as Nokia did have agreements with other companies like Teleatlas for example in certain areas. Not always Navteq. I will have to run up Maps when I get the chance and check the Map Data Provider's name is still shown.

For some reason mine is not showing the correct country. I'm living in the USA and it's telling me that I'm in Qatar. Everything on the map is correct, but the country name is way off. Not sure what's going on. Restart didn't change it. I'll probably reinstall this and see what happens.

Peace,
As it is right now you have a basic POI database on the phone and can go online for other POI.
1st suggestion: -
Allow the extra online POI to be downloaded and installed through maploader so I dont have to go online.
2nd suggestion: -
Allow an inbuilt/integrated google search for POI.
Travelling west on the A31 going over the Ashley Heath roundabour47, joining whenever being navigated in that direction, at the roundabout, the driver is directed off the A31 at that roundabout, and then back on the otherside to the A31. If I change the navigation method to any of the 3 available options, the same thing happens.
Travelling southbound on the A338 when maps takes me on a different round. As part of recalculating the route the navigation asks me to perform U turns on the road. this road is a major dual carriageway, and U turns are not allowed by law!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am using the stable release of ovi maps on my N95 8GB
1 - Numerous roads that should have speed limit data (I have a navigon device that has navteq maps also and it has speed limits in many roads that ovi maps does not have.)
2 - POI that are in the offline POI database on the phone (I can see them and find them when i am offline) are not always visible for me on the map. And yes I have selected those categories in the map section in the settings.
I have a Nokia 97 phone. Two days ago, I updated to Maps Loader 3.0 because the application was showing my wrong current position. The map showed my position at a place which I visited three weeks ago, and which is like thousands of kms away from my home. The map doesn't show my current position, it continues to show where I was three weeks ago. The GPS signal doesn't pick up... How can I solve this problem, please help.
OM remember the last position as current position until it the gps will fix.
when you are far away more than 1000 km the time to fix could be longer. to make it fast you sould actived on gps data ->positioning settings the option to connect to the server.
You have to remember that this kind of connection (Gprs/Edge/Umts not Wifi) could be not free of charge, it depends of your data transfer plan.

I did write my observations about positioning some time ago, therefore I think that Badboy might have the same problem as I have or he might have problem with his phone (known N97's hardware problem).
He might try to: enable assisted GPS (a-GPS), turn on maps app (go to view map screen), after a few seconds restart the maps app and finally go again to view maps -if after that steps the problem persists (shoowing wrong position), then it's probably hardware problem. In my case (Nokia 5800XM) after restarting maps it shows me (of course after a few second, aproximated by network-based positioning) my current (appropriate) position, and after a few more second (if I'm outside the room/building in a "clear view" with sattelites) GPS signal gets fixed.
I didn't have that problem with older software and Nokia Maps app as well I'm not having this problem right now with Google Maps app! So it's a bug in Ovi Maps (3.0.3).

Very bad coverage of central regions of Russia
I have a Nokia 95-8GB and N97 on both of these Devices Google Maps out perform in getting a GPS lock when in built up areas. How come on a Nokia Devices Google managed to get the best out of and Nokia seems to be failing. Please pass this to some one to look at it this will help Nokia in lots of support costs as I reading that Lots of N97 owners are taking their devices to Nokia Repair Centers. Also help to offset some of the bad press Nokia getting.

hi, there is parts of pretoria that was included in the defult maps aplication on a n95 8GB but it is not any more included in Nokia maps 3 or ovi maps.
Hi,
I did allot of driving around Ireland yesterday and found that there are literally 100km-200km of motorway (maybe more) that are not on the maps. These can be found along the dublin to cork and cork to dublin route.
The maps are nearly 2 years old now. When will something new come? My navigon device a(which needs sending back!) has map updates supposedly 4 times a year!
It should be because in the version 2 the main suppliers of the maps were teleatlas and Navteq.
Now it is only Navteq because the owner of Navteq is Nokia. And the owner of teleatlas should be Tomtom.
it is obvious that the two have a could have different coverage.
the maps updates sould be 2 or 3 by year. At the moment there is no way to know if in your mobile you have the last map, mbrett always requested it.

Hi,
I checked my home address (this is that most people do on a map) at Papagos, Attica in Greece and it's incorrect.
Since I am involved in GIS field, I reccognized the error. This error is there, in a specific set of data, since 1995. It appears that you or NAVTEQ obtained data from a Greek company on whose data, I had identified this error, since then. None of the other data providers have this error.
I believe that you should set up a service for reporting errors or changes.
Of course this is a minor error, but It's an annoying error for me.
