Wed, 2009-09-02 11:13 vpajula: Talk-levels of voice guidance

Hi,

For most in-city driving situations voice guidance in driving mode is very bably. Personally I have found it being so chatty (in never really shuts up) that I have to put voice guidance off, as it constantly repeating things it has already said starts to irritate rather fast.

So I'd suggest allowing user to select amount of bable. Something like:
Silent Mode - only tell if GPS-signal has been lost or batteries are about to die
Warning Mode - Also tell other warnings, such as traffic and speed
Directions Mode - Also tell ONCE where to turn, no "keep this lane while driving and then merge to the highway"
Standard Mode - Also warn about coming turns and such
Wife Mode - All the bable there is now, including telling to keep the lane when there is only one lane in the road, nagging about taking longer path and random "Don't drink and drive" -commentary.

Wed, 2009-09-02 18:16 josef.r: Can anybody posted a

Can anybody posted a landscape screenshot while navigated? I´m curious how it looks, if it is more like in a regular navigation without lots of black borders on the right side, up and down... I have my N97 in the service so I can´t try it myself.

My N97 is in the service too for the gps troubles, lens cover and battery cover, you send it to service for which reason?
update:
Today I spoke with the nokia care and they told me if you send the copy of the service report to the nokia care, they will extend the expiration date of your licenses for the period that the phone was in the service.

Wed, 2009-09-02 19:25 esajuntunen: Maps and radio

I use my N97 mini as my entertainment system in my car and use radio a lot.
It is very annoying that while navigating and voice guidance is active, radio is paused every time there is a prompt from Maps.
Could this be fixed somehow?

Wed, 2009-09-02 20:55 bitflung: re: maps and radio

i haven't tried it, but i suspect that if there was no voice data, there would be no silencing radio to play the voice.

try this: using maps loader, remove the voice files form the device. on the device, choose to navigate somewhere and if asked to download the voices say no. now see if the radio plays constantly or if it seems to pause while the voice -would- have prompted you to turn, etc.

if this fixes the issue, obviously it's not a perfect fix since you might want the voice at a later date. but you could clearly see how simple it would be to implement a fix for you. something like requesting an additional option form nokia maps programers along these lines, "create a setting to disable the voice prompts in navigation based on whether or not another audio source is currently in use".

1. Can't search by address.
Was this option removed?

2. Voice navigation should pause Music Player when announcing directions and then resume the player when done.

Thu, 2009-09-03 17:47 ToucheTurtle: Music Player and Nearest Fuel stop

Have to disagree with DocTran about the Music player i would prefer it as it was around about maps 1 or 2 where the voice navigation would reduce the volume on the Music (but not pause it) and give the direction and then return the volume to original level.

Also when navigating in drive could we have a one touch icon in the options menu that allows you to navigate directly to the nearest ( either on the route or by travel distance) fuel station?

PS this latest version 3.03 seems a lot better than the 3.01 version

Fri, 2009-09-04 23:16 vpajula: Speed limit

Currently speed limit seems to be shown every now and then, with some kind of logic I don't understand. If it is known - why not show it all the time? For example today my N97 warned me of a upcoming camera, but I never managed to actually show me the speed limit.

In fact - for upcoming speed cameras, why not even show speed limit bigger-than-normal on the screen?

Sun, 2009-09-06 22:17 bartbiemond: route overview with panning

When navigating a destination it is not easy to get an overview of the route that has been calculated by Nokia Maps. A saved route kan be displayed, but in this form it is not possible to pan.
So make it easy to get an overview of a calculated route and make it possible to pan en zoom this route.
Congrats on the new beta. Its a big improvement.

Mon, 2009-09-07 09:19 oppwol: Verkehrsinfo / Umleitung

Deutsche Version

Mon, 2009-09-07 15:04 fldude99: Rout overview

The current route overview is useless. Make a route overview with the ability to pan-also, please add a text version of the route overview, showing all the turns. This is a huge selling point IMO

I would suggest to have a map during navigation (landscape) on the full display without the black border on the right side which takes a lot of space! Be closer to the real navigation (Garmin etc...) N97 has a nice big display but in the lancape mode there is lot black spaces all around a than the map is too small. I would suggest to keep the design of the vertical mode in the landscape as well - with the indications not only on the right side, but foe eg. speed limit warnig and compass left down etc...

Tue, 2009-09-08 18:53 noelp: Bluetooth Voice Guidance problem

I know this point has come up tons of times in previous realeses, but the problem is still there, when my N97 is connected to my car's bluetooth I cannot hear the Voice instructions as I dont' have A2DP bluetooth. Is there a way an option could be added to direct teh voice audio to the phone's loudspeaker by default?

Wed, 2009-09-09 12:11 jose967719201: Read SMS during navigation ???

Could it be possible to use a scrolling text on the bottom screen line informing new message from XXXX and the use of the RED - GREEN key´s in order to Cancel or Read it ?????
If GREEN (read) is the answer then the same bottom line will srcoll (or speak) the message till the end and loop. Using again RED to end reading (speaking), GREEN to do a call using the number.
May be there is an better way but I do use a lot of sms´s conversation during my way to work or travelling arround so navigation must not be interrupted and it could run sms or calls in good shape like that.
This sugestion could be usefull also for S60 - 3 ( nokia 6210 navigator )

Wed, 2009-09-09 23:51 ToucheTurtle: Better handling of calls to phones loudspeaker

Hi

Could you try and implement a better way of accepting a call and routing it through the phone loudspeaker whilst in navigation - maybe have two buttons appear - one to accept normally the other to accept through the loudspeaker.

This would make it a bit more user friendly when driving - which would keep it safer and legal.

Currently you have to try and switch it from the ear piece which answers as the default to the loudspeaker before the caller gives up trying to speak to you!

An example of this could be the call options screen that appears if a call comes into the phone when it is unlocked. I hope that my description is clear enough to understand!

Wed, 2009-09-16 00:42 ravidavi: Imperial distance units

I don't know about others, but it makes no sense to me to hear "After 615 yards, ...". I have no clue how far away that is. Tell me "After one third of a mile, ...".

Talking to friends here in the states, NOBODY here wants to hear how many yards to drive. For fractions of a mile, we'd rather hear 3/4, 2/3, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, and 1/8. Now I recognize that there are other countries where Imperial units are used while driving, so maybe people from there can chime in on whether "923 yards" has any meaning to them? :D

Thanks!

Fri, 2009-09-18 00:54 axelbeiovi: zoom and scroll / pan on route preview

When displaying the route preview it's only possible to zoom, but not to scroll. So it's impossible to zoom on details! I'd like to check the route, and see if it seems to be good (very often navis make strange choices...), but with the normal preview and simulation it's almost impossible. I'd like to be able to zoom on every area of the screen while displaying the preview!

Mon, 2009-09-21 06:15 DocTran: repeat directions

quote: "Have to disagree with DocTran about the Music player i would prefer it as it was around about maps 1 or 2 where the voice navigation would reduce the volume on the Music (but not pause it) and give the direction and then return the volume to original level."

Try listening to a podcast. You have Maps giving you directions at the same time people in your show are talking. It leads to a very confusing situation.

Maps should pause and resume the music just like when you take a call when announcing a direction.

-------------------
I agree that a loudspeaker option while driving needs to be better implemented. We don't always have our bluetooth headsets with us.

-------------------
We should have an easier way to get Maps to repeat directions. The way it is now, you need to touch the screen to bring up options, then find the repeat button. This option should be one click away.

Fri, 2009-09-25 16:44 grebble: Yards in imperial distances

Following on with what Ravi was saying about yards (post #20), I'm in the UK and yards are used together with fractions of a mile, both on road signs and in navigation. But yards are more commonly used in smaller distances (up to 1/4 mile) and vulgar fractions are used thereafter. Therefore to me, 'in 400 yards turn right' means something, but 'in 1,200 yards turn left' would have me thinking.

Therefore the ideal solution to me would be to use yards for short distances (e.g. in 400 yards turn right), and fractions (in quarters) for longer (e.g. in 3/4 mile turn left). Also the command 'follow the course of the road for 1 and a half miles' would mean more than the current 10-decimal place accuracy, 'follow the course of the road for 1.5232323232 miles.'

Mon, 2009-09-28 19:12 ramok: Speed limit suggestions

As already mentioned, when approaching speed cameras, speed limit should be bigger than normal, with a configurable option to be said through a speaker. I also can't find feature, I liked in previous (final) version -the option to quieten voice speed warning while keeping visual indicator.

And, as it is available in many on-deck computers in cars nowadays -an option to set a speed limit (max speed, despite the road limit) by Yourself should be given (could be handy for eco-driving style, for example could warn You that You are driving to fast (to save fuel or something), let's say over 110km/h, even if it is legal to do so -particularly on a higway where in many countries 130km/h is the actual road limit).

Mon, 2009-10-19 11:31 davidmct: How far can I get - new feature

Driving back from Spain (1000+ miles) I wanted to push the driving a little further as was making good progress. I wanted to know how much further I would be in H hrs following my current route and whether around that future location there were hotels and restaurants within a M mile/N minute radius to stop in. Also what the remaining time to final destination was if I choose to stop/detour. browsing the map around that location would enable me to make a choice and ideally I could click on a POI of interest such as a hotel and get a phoen number/weblink to check reviews or make a booking

You could extend this to ask something like "from my current location I want to drive/walk M miles/ H hours. What is interesting to see from POI cataegory P (eg monuments, restaurants, landmarks, museums etc)"

Mon, 2009-10-26 14:24 meyhoernchen: Route planner improvements

Hi,

First of all I am sorry for the lack of the route planner in the beta version.
We'll bring it back in the commercial solution but unfortunately we hadn't had enough time to improve this service.
Actually we also not tackle it in the next Nokia Maps version but in the second next as a lot of problems need to be solved and the route planner made it only after the traffic improvements :-(
All suggestions here are valid and heard and will be considered.

To summarize the other questions and proposals a bit:
- Manual zoom to overrule autozoom will be there for the commercial version ( it will be 8 seconds before the autozoom snaps back)
- We prepared everything to tackle the issues about voice guidance interacting with other services such as music or phone calls. As a lot of this will depend on the platform itself I can't really say when the soultions will be in place
- Unfortunately we will have no major steps in the 3.03 version of Nokia maps to improve the traffic service but for the next version it will be the main topic to improve this

Enjoy!
