Review for Ovi Maps Beta for mobile

Wed, 2009-09-02 19:25 ravidavi: Nokia 5800

Just installed the new beta on my 5800 (with v30.0.011), and it's really nice! Found all my licenses and maps right away, and app loading is a fraction of what it used to be. Here are my first thoughts.

Home Screen:
When you load up the program you're shown a "home screen" with icons of things you can do. In my opinion, the icons are way too small. Many many people will want to use navigation in their cars, and trying to hit those tiny icons while driving will be a fun game indeed. :) However I definitely do like the idea of having this home screen where I can quickly access different functions (my position, drive, walk, ...).

The actual map screen is slightly cleaned up. There seems to be more space available for mapping, which is good. In the previous version, if your current GPS position was visible onscreen but you weren't tracking it, it was damn near impossible to get the cursor *right on* the red dot to begin tracking. This seems to have been improved now ... just get the selection cursor "near" the red dot and it'll snap to your position. THANK YOU.

OK, so what the heck ... NO SCREEN ROTATING STILL????? You have auto screen rotate for the N97 and for the 5800 navigation edition (apparent from the NE's promo video), but you can't get the freaking screen to go to landscape on the 5800?? What the fu**!

Maybe I'm missing this, but there is no longer a "go online" option. Yes the option to automatically go online at startup is still there, but I used to always have that turned off and just go online manually when I need to. Is there any way to still do this?

Finally, the new Michelin, Lonely Planet, and Events categories are great! I can look up movies or events near the current map location easily ... I'll definitely try this out on the fly sometime!

Thanks for the improvements!

For safety reason it is better not play with the phone whil you driving.

Yes you are correct navio, I shouldn't have said "while driving". However Nokia explicitly sells a "Drive Navigation" which is intended to use while driving. Granted the other functions should only be used when safely parked, but even still those icons (more specifically, the text on the icons) are just too small to use effectively in a car.

Wed, 2009-09-23 17:53 geepeegee: Going online with 5800XM with Maps Beta

Hi there, I am having problems going online with Maps Beta. I had the same problem with the previous version too. When I want to go online I just get stuck in an endless loop, I get "Something went wrong and the connection failed - Please try again later" with no further reason. I can however go online with other apps such as the browser etc.

I want to go on line with Shops & Licences to buy the City Explorers but cant do that.

thanks in advance for anyones help.

hi geepeegee,
What is the firmware version you have on your 5800? Have you tried using Nokia Software Updater to install the latest version? Be sure to backup any necessary data before you start :-)

Let me know if that works.

Kee

Great update except for the screen rotation. Would make a great app even more user friendly for the 5800.
Please try and rectify this exclusion in the future for all us users.
Keep up the good work...

dogsfoot: Screen rotation to landscape mode works just fine if you have firmware v31 on your 5800. Use Nokia Software Updater to update your phone.

As ravidavi wrote, you need to have installed the Fw 31, after you have to set the phone in autorotate.
The update of the phone with NSU depends if the phone is branded or not and which product code you have, look here http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/devic....
About the update using a Mac, I am sorry, I cannot help you.

@ffullero

Erase old maps data, version 2 maps is not compatible with version 3, i supose Ovi maps uses version 3 as well... the same thing happened to me, but Nokia Maps 3.0 wouldn't open at all!

I thing the maps are in a folder called cities... or something... search in nokia maps page, they provide the information about removing old maps data for upgrading as well...

in the memory card (e:) there is too the file QF and for the downgrade you need delete it togheter the folder cities. For the update, usually it ask for delete maps, if it does not ask, you have to delete them.
