Discussion for Ovi Maps Beta for mobile

BETA or FINAL?

If you browse to http://betalabs.nokia.com/betas/view/ovi-maps you see Ovi Maps as shown as a BETA but if you browse to http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps and select eg. the N97 or 5800 you don't that it's a BETA but a FINAL.

Nokia, why is it so complicated for you to keep the stuff sorted, correctly categorized and stored at a single location? Should i develop a website completely myself so you know it's possible or do you trust me if i say that it is?

Don't get me wrong. I love having Ovi Maps 3.0 finally on the N97.

The version at

The version at europe.nokia.com is the release from 2 months ago, and the version on betalabs is the beta from yesterday. The version numbers are different. Of course Nokia isn't going to put the beta version up on its release servers!

I would assume without checking that the version on the website

I would assume without checking that the version on the maps website may eb a newer version, possibly 3.02 as 3.01 was pulled from the Maps site due to known data loss and GPS issues. For a short period the N97 was downgraded on the Maps website to Maps 2 and has now been upgraded back to Maps 3 with the Maps Updater so I would assuem this would be a newer version than that which was pulled. haven't checked as I am running the new v3.03 beta version.

This is a perpetual beta world

Maps team typically has several versions available simultaneously:1) Commercial version for sales packages etc.2) Public beta version at Beta Labs3) Internal alpha prototype at Nokia intranetThe beta version (2) is always richer than the commercial one (1), but obviously, it's also more unstable. You are free to choose which one you prefer. Is it too confusing for you that we dropped the version numbering? Our plan was to keep the link http://betalabs.nokia.com/ovi-maps available as permalink, where one could always find the latest beta (if available), despite version number.Do you have an alternative proposal that would be better than the current state? If so, I'd be happy to make it happen :-)

May be worth mentioning that the app link to this forum is S60v5

May be worth mentioning that the app link to this forum is S60v5. Also it seems that the 5530 is missing off the compatible list although it's S60v5 and someone has already posted who is using it. Also seen a couple of posts from an N95 (S60v3) user in this forum mentioning their bugs.

This is more of an alpha than a beta

I updated whilst on the road. The install deleted my maps without asking or checking if map data is version 3.
I'm fed up of features being removed, I expect more features than previous versions not less. Definately need category search and multi point routing. Also cars need petrol, addition of petrol stops or search of nearest petrol station on route and off route just in case you need it quicker.
Give warning when features are removed.
Ask users if you like features.
Listen to users, i posted problems with maps 3 beta with N95 but it was released without fixing the problem. If you think its fixed then reply to posts on what the fix is.
rant over, went back to maps 3.1 on N97 as this is an alpha release to show initial interface with reducedd feature set
