Updated Beta version: Comments about the improved performance (current Beta version 0.4.154.0)

Hi,

We have improved the performance of the updated Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0 (version 0.4.122.0). This means less CPU and RAM memory usage.

We would like to get your comments under this tag.

Regards,

HHaapis

Well memory usage is still

Well memory usage is still terribly much! In my system Ovi suite + some Nokia M platform combined together uses 350mb of RAM!!!!! That's huge amount of ram. Sync starting was slow but itself syncing was fast. Good improments, but still some work to do.

OS: Vista SP2
System: Athlon x2 dualcore @ 2,4ghz. 2gb of ram
phone: N79

processes running all the time

Memory usage when actually using the app definetly needs improvement, but worse fo me is leaving NokiaMServer.exe running all the time, doing nothing useful, but taking 34MB at the moment. Any application that stays running permanently needs to be optional, if it does in fact have any features that might be a useful reason for it to stay running.

Kill NokiaMServer.exe as background app

No need for NokiaMServer.exe to always run in the background.

Well why it then starts

Well why it then starts every time when I reboot my computer?? What it is anyway, and why it is installed there?

NokiaMserver.exe process is database process

Hi, to clarify the role NokiaMServer.exe process in Nokia Ovi Suite application, it is actually pretty much needed process to run Nokia Ovi Suite properly, because it controls databases for Nokia Ovi Suite. For example contacts and message databases.Otherwise, optimization work for memory consumption continues still.-- Samuli

Problem with Calendar Sync

It's a pitty, that the version isn't very stable under Windows Vista 32-bit SP2 after 10 min. the Programm is shutting down by my System. I hope it runs better under my Windows 7 Buisness version with 64-bit.

In my opinion the new Layout is very comfortable and useful, i like it very.

Database process

There is still no need to run NokiaMServer all the time even if it is the database process. Either run it as needed when starting Ovi or as an "on demand" service in Windows.

Memory usage

I am using Windows Vista SP2 on an acer netbook. I have noticed that Nokia Ovi suite definitely loads much faster than before and syncs contacts and messages better. However, I have had a few crashes so far while syncing and/or playing music. It seems like there are still many bugs to iron out.

Memory usage as reported by windows task manager (just after the application launches):
NokiaOviSuite.exe 152,024K
NokiaMServer.exe 57,720K

Memory usage without phone connected (again just after launch):
NokiaOviSuite.exe 114,768K
NokiaMServer.exe 48,828K

still very slow, still doesn't work properly

it didn't always recognize the internet connection....(?)

on maps:
the the maps loader application, i could choose what voice i like to downlaod to my phone. with the maps section in Ovi 2.0 i can't choose it.

about the Contacts:
Why can't i sync it directly to Ovi website? i don't have anything to do with the contacts on my PC. the outlook is a nice option which i don't really use, but i do sync my phone a lot with OVI site, and running things there. i think you should focus on the internet sync with the phone, because if my phone is lost, i can retrieve almost the whole info from the web. if i want to backup it on my pc, there are other tools for it.
And another question about it, why syncing to the PC all the contacts and massages, and not managing them from the phone itself through OVI suite? on pc-suite you could do it, and it was much faster that way. i don't think you had any benefit from syncing everything to the pc.
the same mark for managing calendar and tasks. so easy to do it on the web, it should be even easier on OVI Suite 2, and should be directly sync to the OVI account and the phone.

So basicly, i think OVI Suite 2.0 should be a smart connection between the phone and the internet, and not like Ovi-Suite 1 which was a strange unfriendly version of PC-suite.

The Nokia M server is still

The Nokia M server is still terrible. Over 500MB of RAM used. Even assuming my databases are terribly fragmented (since I had both PC suite and Ovi 1.1 installed before), surely you could rebuild them upon initial installation?

My computer is struggling to run Ovi Suite.

Finally got the improved performance out of it!

I have been a 'bit' surprised that after every upgrade the Beta version seemed to get slover and slover and more unstabile. Finally after this upgrade the synchronizing with Outlook stopped totally and my machine got so slow that sometimes I even coudn't shut it down after starting Ovi Suite. There was also problems when trying the check out upgrades etc.

Finally I was frustrated enough and uninstalled every program that has Nokia on it's name, then I run registry cleanup and reboot so many times that the registry was finally clean.

Then I installed the latest version againg and what happened?

Now it starts faster, is working very smoothly, processer fan keeps silent, it recognise device almost immediately when it is connected and synchronization starts almost immediately.

Amazing but now I believe that performance has improved and am looking forward to getting the next upgrades.

Its to much of a memory hog

....Hi, to clarify the role NokiaMServer.exe process in Nokia Ovi Suite application, it is actually pretty much needed process to run Nokia Ovi Suite properly, because it controls databases for Nokia Ovi Suite. For example contacts and message databases.Otherwise, optimization work for memory consumption continues still.-- Samuli........
Yes but I do not need this Process when I am not using Ovi suite. Ovi suite at the moment is the most sluggish and most cpu hungry app on my computer! Its also annoying that it sees fit to install and run its uneeded "behind the scenes" process on my childrens account they are not old enough to have mobiles yet...
For a standard two year old computer this software is way too bloated and resource hungry
That said it does look like a rough diamond in the making

Total disappointment

I tried Ovi Suite 2.0 today and it was a huge disappointment. I have N79 and Windows 7 x64.
1) After installation, NokiaMServer took 30% of my Core 2 Quad and 590MB of RAM and kept the hard disk very busy. And it went on and on for an hour, so I killed the process.
2) Contact sync went OK, but it was unable to sync Photos, Messages (it showed Preparing... and nothing happened).
3) Ovi Suite itself took 200MB RAM. What the hell are you doing with it?
4) Another disappointment was the lack of settings for sync with Outlook. There was no longer a setting to specify the actual Outlook folder to sync to (Contacts, Messages, Calendar etc.) like it was in Ovi Suite 1.1 and PC suite. I assume that it syncs to the default folders, but that is not enough. I think you are trying to make it too simple. It will be useless this way.
5) What exactly is NokiaMServer doing while it is consuming huge amounts of resources? Indexing everything or what? It could ask for settings first, not everyone wants to have his hard drive indexed by default. Again, I think you are trying to make it so simple that it will be useless!
6) I had to uninstall it right away.
7) Maps application shows what is on the device, which is a plus, but doesn't show versions, so one cannot know if update is necessary
8) Maps only allows "Delete all" from the device.

This version is a disaster

Basically, nothing I do works with this release. When it first comes up, it tells me that "Installation failed...Support software installation failed".

I can press OK and get a useless message to "Right-click on Nokia N97 icon and choose Options". I try to "Install support software", and it fails also with a useless "Installation failed....Support software installation failed".

Terrific...This "wonderful" app doesn't even know how to report a meaningful error, let alone wouldn't it be nice if it just worked.

Wish I never tried this garbage.

And yes, it is "pretty".

Have you checked this issue in latest build?

Have you tested this issue in latest beta Build, because this issue was occurred in 0.4.122.0 build(third beta build) but atleast these issues are not occurring in latest build 0.4.154.0?

I'm sorry to say, it's

I'm sorry to say, it's almost insulting to ask that question of someone willing to try beta software and supply feedback. It should be obvious that beta users expect new versions regularly, and use them before complaining. Apparently this issue, as well as others, are not fixed. In fact, IMHO, the quality has taken a step backwards, as the previous build (don't remember the number) worked well for me.

My whole mess started when I tried to bring up OVI and was told that it was "expired" and I had to install the latest version. That left me no choice.

Well, apparently installing over a previous beta doesn't work and it left things somewhat messy. I then tried to uninstall every entry in my "add/remove" programs that was NOKIA software (OVI and some cable driver). After rebooting, I tried to install OVI again and nothing changed.

I then tried to uninstall OVI, but was told that "I can't uninstall a program that was not installed". That was cute.

Next step was to use 3rd party software to rid my machine and registry of every trace of Nokia. After a reboot I was finally able to install OVI, connect to my N97, and actually have it not display the "Support Software Installation Failed" message. HOWEVER.....
no matter what operation I tried to do (I wanted to do a complete backup), I was informed that it could not be done because "...another operation.." was in progress. That ridiculously useless message told me nothing. I left the phone attached for about an hour to see if that "..other operation.." ever finished. No luck. Still could not sync, backup, etc. etc.

This software has a LONG way to go. Perhaps some real testing would be useful. And if Nokia really cares about this release, it would make sense to build in some diagnostics that can be easily sent off to their beta labs from us guinea pigs..not expect us to go hunting around for some obscure logs to send.

O/S is Windows 7 x64 RTM; Phone is N97;
