Suggestion for Ovi Maps Beta for mobile

Support for EGNOS

Hello,
I would definitely appreciate support for EGNOS system. Do you plan this for next release of Ovi Maps? Or it must be supported the phone too? I have nokia 5800, which does not seem to support EGNOS. But for GPS i use LD-4W, which has the support for EGNOS. So what you plan with EGNOS?
Thank you for reply.

Re: Support for EGNOS

Hi,

We will have Egnos and WAAS supported in GPSCost5.0D chip and onwards. Our GPS will automatically search for WAAS and Egnos satellites and if those are audible (=direct line of sight), those are automatically used for improving positioning accuracy.

We will support these SBAS systems like Egnos, but real benefit will be small in accuracy vice in urban areas where increased accuracy is more beneficial(and with poor antennas). SBAS systems will help in accuracy vice during high solar activity periods.

We have planned to implement assistance data feature called Local Ionospheric Models which enables us to reach same benefits also in urban areas and even better protection against lost of positioning accuracy during high solar activity periods (solar cycle).

@meyhoernchen

Hello,
I would like to ask you if the GPSCost5.0D chip is installed on the N97.
I cannot find any information about this.
Best regards

Re: Re: Support for EGNOS

Thanks for info meyhoernchen, my LD-4W already support EGNOS(as stated in manual), but I am afraid that the application Position in Nokia 5800 can not gain those data. It doesnt show the channel used for EGNOS in Satelite status and accuracy of position is around 6 to 9 meters horizontaly and approx. 10-15 meters verticaly. With EGNOS those numbers would be 2 in H and 5 in V. I usualy use navigation in urban area so better precision is crucial for me. Can I force app. position to gain those data?
Local Ionospheric model sounds good, but high solar activity is now out of sight as the sun is in long lasting minimum right now. One spot last week and now again nothing.
Thank you for reply.
