Review for Ovi Maps Beta for mobile

Thu, 2009-10-15 00:53 sanderd1: Doesn't operate on E71X

Released version of Ovi Maps works fine on my E71X. After upgrading to this beta version, I get a message stating that "my hardware is not supported". Had to revert to released version after which I'm back in buisness.

Thu, 2009-10-15 08:35 mbrett: What BETA Version have yuo tried to install

The E71x is a S60 3rd Edition, Feature Pack 2 phone ( http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/E71x )and therefor will not run the version of OVI Mpas BETA for mobile discussed in this forum as the OVI Maps BETA for mobile page does state:

Compatibility

Ovi MapsBeta works with compatible Nokia devices:

* Nokia N97
* Nokia N97 mini
* Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition
* Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

What version of OVI Maps have you tried to install?

The E71x does not presently have a newer BETA version than the release version on http://www.nokia.com/maps

I beleive the S60v3 version of OVI Maps graduated a few months ago.

Thanks for the feedback.
I read some more and you are correct.
I presently have 3.01(17) running fine with both American and Europe maps loaded. BTW, I noticed your UK address. I travel to Cambridge 1/2 time; work-related.
The Beta version was as I recall 3.0.3???

Thu, 2009-10-22 04:05 mertyl: works on my E71x, sort of

The beta worked on my E71x, as does 3.01 09 which I have currently running, with some caveats.

- licensing in the US is odd, to say the least (search "conspiracy")

- 'going online' is open to interpretation. I'm still not sure how Nokia interprets the term on the E71x, but it apparently has nothing to do with a wifi connection in the background, no matter what the 'network destination' is set for in settings. For those of us not running a data plan (shhhh, don't tell you know who) that's unfortunate for syncing, licensing, shopping, etc.

still, its a very nice, simple app that provides tremendous info. I'm looking forward to it helping get around Paris and London in a week.

Fri, 2009-10-23 14:19 picklejam: Ovi maps for 6700 classic?

Is there a version I can run on my 6700 Classic? Also, I bought my phone in a different country and so it does not have Australian maps. How can I load map for a 6700?

Fri, 2009-10-23 14:21 yannve: ah yes, "graduated"

Yes, Maps 3 "graduated" a while ago. With marvelous features such as the much announced 3D models disappearing (worked before graduation), coordinate entry field broken, categories and landmark icons broken, and so on. This beta is apparently for revision 5 devices only (touchscreen), and I'm led to believe there won't ever be another version functioning as well as version 2 used to...

The 3D appears only if you have a valide license. It is in this way from the release of the beta of 11 june and this release is only for n97 and 5800 (s60 v5)
