Maps does work nicely and well in your home network when you have a data package plan . But as soon your in an outside network ( Country ) you start paying for a horrible price the network assisted positioning.
By turning "network positioning " and "assisted gps "off in settingsm of your fone ( and only let it run on gps positioning " it will horribly fail to get a connection in a reasonable time .. it may take up to 30 min until the antenna pick up a descend signal ( talking on a open space here )
i paid already 50€ extra on my fone bill for the data packages on ouside network and for 129€ you can get a curring edge gps reciver .... do the math ....
