Review for Nokia Ovi Suite 2.0

Tue, 2009-11-03 11:45 pedro.rocha: For god sake!! Return to old ovi suit

It is impressive the time needed to syncronise even the tasks and agenda via bluetooth, let alone using the full sync.

I am currently at more than 20 minutes with the "preparing to sync calendar and tasks" message. Photos sync is impossible and the hold messaging sync was more quicker and more proficient in use, while enabling a full listing of all messages (i.e. a usefull log) while currently it only displays those at the device. The music sync is awfull, not only it take ages (yesterday I was more than ONE HOUR trying to sync, until I had to give up - and yes using USB) and it also duplicates entries (from 2gb available in my device, after the frustating attempt to sync I was with only 1,5).

Tech data: I have a n95 8gb, and a 1.6 intel pentium M, with 1gb ram.

Having this in mind, I have one request: please make available the hold sync application (which enabled sync of calendar, tasks, notes and contacts in 20 seconds) and also make available the hold ovi suit available for all of us who do not have time to wait hours for a sync.

Thank you

Hello Pedro
I can only recommend you to revert to PC-suite and Nokia Photos, and wait for a stable Ovi-suite that hopefully will grow to support all the features of PC-suite.

Tue, 2009-11-03 20:46 pedro.rocha: Answering question on data amounts

Contact items: around 500 contacts (persons);
Calendar and task items: no idea (but in comparison to the Nokia Sync application, it took me only 15-20 seconds, note that the data is always in sync with my outlook, so there was no major changes);
Notes: 45 notes (with 20 characters each (maximum);
Messages: 45 sms (and 2 mms but with very small size pictures)
Photos: 1GB
Music Files: 1.5 GB
ALL data (i.e. not counting with one more contact) was already in the PC. Exception is being made to the Music files.

Key elements for analysis:
0. Note that this was not an installation from scratch, i.e. most of the data was synced, on the basis of the previous OVI SUITE (since I sync everyday). I.E. The pictures, calendar info, tasks, notes, etc... were already in the PC (sync with previous version of OVI)
1. In exception to the music (which I have cancelled, since it was blocked and I couldn't even look to the status), all other syncs WERE NOT the first sync (which usually takes longer).
2. the time reported during this morning calendar syncing (which took me 20 minutes), was already after an yesterday night's sync already using this last version of OVI.
3. The messaging sync do not transfer info to the computer disc, or at least and despite identifying messages in the device, when I click on all messages (I presume it refers to in the PC) none appear. Apparently, after several tries, it transferred only one message, to the PC, the one that I have sent this morning. Additionally, it do not retrieves the data that was already in the nokia photos software (which in timeline view mode present all sms).
4. Despite not being comparable, now things tend to do not take much time (nevertheless no data was due to be synced - i.e. no changes). I will be testing more, to provide additional feeback on this

Tue, 2009-11-03 20:52 pedro.rocha: Answering in regard to revert suggestion

thank you for your comment.

In fact I am still using Nokia Photos (no revert necessary, since the new installation didn't erase it), since the "log" it maintains is very usefull, i.e. the timeline cronology gathering both images and sms are one of the characteristics that I value the most in the nokia photos software. It is not a mere gadget. It is in fact a very useful feature.

In regard to the revert Nseries suit, quite frankly I am afraid that the databases are not compatible, and I am afraid to loose all the information stored only in my pc. Nevertheless thank you for your support.

Tue, 2009-11-03 21:22 pedro.rocha: Reporting on the duplication of data in the device

Apparently the impossibility of the software to accept folders and files with additional stops/points (".") in the name (that goes beyond the stop that precedes file extension), implicates the duplication of files when syncing, notably music files. This was one of the facts that implicated that after sync I had more 400Mb in use. However this does not explain the consumption of the 400Mb in the device's/card memory.
