Bugreport: Image on the 2D barcode viewer icon is as per web shortcut by mbrett

The icon on the N97 Point and Find client for the 2D barcodes appears like the barcode on the Betalabs Point and Find Application page. I therefor installed Point and Find and pointed my N97 camera at the Point and Find application page on the Betalabs site only to be told "no data".

I was hoping that point and find was going to operate as a 2D barcode reader like the one destinctly missing from S60v5 Nokia Devices. Presently it appears not.

Hi mspeare, and thank you for your feedback. Could you please clarify if you are browsing from a mobile phone, or from your desktop? If you go to pointandfind.nokia.com from your mobile, and we do not support your device, then yes, it's likely you'll get this message. To find out information about P&F, I suggest to look up our site from your desktop.
Hope this helps,

Comment to 'Discussion: How can you suggest we try Creating a World when . . .' by scmoatti

Hi all,

Thank you for your good feedback and suggestion on our business model. At the moment, our client is available for free to download. When you are in the City Guide experience, you can contribute content and it's free to do so.

We're asking for a subscription fee only when you decide to take the big leap and create your own experience on our platform. I understand you would like to be able to do this for free as well, however at the moment we do not offer this. Please stay tuned, I'll post on this blog if/when we decide to do so.

Br and again, please keep those suggestions coming,

Talking about uploads.. what would be the incentive or reward for end users to tag something anyway? Currently no options to add info to tags or modify/change them.
I see great potential, just the options and business model needs to be cleared.

Agreed.. the whole idea of paying for a limited shared environment is maybe nice for commercial customers, but definately not for end users.
Consider that you need your end users to build a trusted growing environment of tags and content, you will never achief this by asking a rediculous contribution for something that the public for the time being sees as a gimmick.

Also consider that the competition (read android based phones are miles ahead using augmented reality like browsers) regarding content and usuability.

I would expect (but could not try obviously) that when I tag something on my phone, I will be possible to edit and add information to those uploaded tags on the portal, creating a wiki like growing environment of interst points. Espesially in city mode.

As an example where you could get mony from this project would be something sililar as the ATM machine overlays you get from ING on the android right now. They would maybe pay to have their content delivered with nice ads, aditional ING office information etc.

But please, leave the contribution for end users that want to participate and help you mature this application and gain the momentum while you still can!

I'm browsing the point and find blog and almost every link I try to look at brings up a screen telling me that my phone is not currently supported. I think this is iriitating for three reasons

1 I am just looking for information about the app out of curiosity.

2 I thought a beta was supposed to be tested on as many plateforms as possible not limmited to a few.

3 my phone IS supported I installed it on my e90 communicator through ovi and it works fine ( only in portrait mode i.e. The PDA part closed)

i was very excited about both p&f and it's potential but i will never pay to try out a beta product, as i see it im helping you out for free so asking me to pay to do that is rather silly. That u ask for an intial. Payment and clearly state that the free test service may end at any given time with the option of upgrading is fair enough though. Anyway for me ill keep providing feedback to nokia's free betas & exprimental project and i do it for free. Ofcourse wont say no if you choose to pay me though its optional =)-- N95 31.0.0.17 | N97 11.0.0.21 ---

I downloaded this after seeing a similar app on my friend's iPhone, and am so disappointed with the Nokia version. With the iPhone app, he launched it, it gave a clear indication on screen where a barcode should be, and we scanned the barcodes of three things on my deskand the app took me straight to reviews online, and purchase opportunities.

Downloaded Point and Find, and:
- It asks me for "Movies" or "Shopping". Huh? Not particularly intuitive if I just want to scan a barcode. So I select shopping and try three different CD barcodes and three different book barcodes. Nothing. Irritatingly, the paid advert works.
- There isn't an indication onscreen of where the barcode should be. I presumed "ensure the barcode is as large in the photo window as possible, but have since seen posts in this forum that say it should be about a third of the width of the photo window?
- Does the iPhone app use some other onlne service to recognise UPC codes? The likelihood that the three items I chose from my desk would be in a database that someone had to actively maintain seems low. Not as low as the likelihood than anything I scan in P&F is recognised, though.
- It keeps defaulting to the wrong access point, which I'm sure doesn't help.
- How about some textual clues onscreen as to what the app is doing?
- The app spends so long trying to scan barcodes that the screen backlight switches off before it successfully scans anything.

Has anyone managed to succesfully scan any of the first ten items they tried?

This app would be so useful if you could scan a bar code of an item you are interested in and e taken to a kelkoo search, or an online review site. That is dependent on it recognising something. Ever.
