This is somewhere between a suggestion and a bug.
Two issues on selecting what is 'close by' for "Gigs now" and others
1) If you live in a rural area you may see a broader range of venues as local, than if you live in the city.
I would suggest a "Search radius" option with a default that includes at least the nearest say 20 venues at installation time.
2) When deciding WHAT is 'near by' the straight line distance is used, but there might be a mountain or some water in between.... Why not call the same services used by OviMaps to do a (rough) calculation of the travelling distance?
IF the phone got OviMaps, it may do the calculations locally, otherwise let a webserver do the job.
(And please respect the "Application settings", "Positioning", "notation preferences", "measurement system")
