Nokia Drop Firefox extension not working on Nokia Belle

2012-02-12 @ 02:09 by mjdel
1) Installed latest Drop (1.3.1) from betalabs page on Nokia N8 Belle (product code 0599222, version 111.030.0609.C09.01) on which I've installed Maps Suite Beta 2.0 also from betalabs.

2) Drop app connects successfully via Wifi using my usual Nokia account credentials, displaying the "Connected" green dot.

3) Opening //chat.ovi.com:5223 in the Nokia browser redirects to the generic browser message page "Browser unable to connect to website: http://chat.ovi.com:5223 my configuration is standard stuff for a home network: Windows 7 SP1 x64 using its own firewall connected to a Wifi router with a SPI firewall and symmetrical NAT. The Windows network type is "Home Network".

3) Installed latest Drop Firefox extension from betalabs link. Restarted browser.

4) Went to https://drop.nokia.com/latest/home and made sure I was logged in to my Nokia account (indication in upper RHS of the page).

5) Went to several different web sites in Firefox, each time pressing the Nokia Drop extension button to send the URL to the Nokia N8. The extension icon twirls a bit, and then displays a red exclamation mark: and nothing gets transmitted to the N8.

6) Tried installing the 1.02 Notifications package, but cancelled it: my N8 already has 1.04 installed.

All of Drop worked perfectly on Symbian "Anna"(025.008.whatever), very convenient application, I hate to lose it.

Any others experiencing the same difficulties?

Could you try with new client which was updated today. Is this problem valid also with the new client?

Product team response

hi!

Have you also updated your browser extension? Could you check that which version you have installed to your browser and could you also try with Nokia Store?

OK, I've installed the latest Belle version from betalabs: 1.04(12072) and rebooted my N8-00. I then removed the Nokia Drop Firefox extension, restarted Firefox, navigated to the install page on betalabs for the latest XPI Once installed, I restarted Firefox, started and authenticated the Belle application, waited for the "Connected" indication, and then used the Drop browser button to send a current page to the device (I used https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/plotting-a-road-map-for-a-...). The browser button twirled and then displayed a red exclamation mark.

Just before I pressed the browser button, I configured my WiFi router to log all the TCP/UDP traffic; my PC is 10.11.12.5 and my Nokia 10.11.12.9 (and there are a lot of irrelevant transactions, but I include it all verbatim); once the red exclamation mark appeared I stopped the logging. The content of transactions cannot be logged this way, I shall have to look into the native Windows 7 TCP/IP trace facilities for that kind of logging.

O.K., I did a little reading (I *barely* understand TCP/IP networking) and installed the "Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4" and then used the Windows 7 "netsh trace" command to trace the NDIS "scenario" and produce some trace files while I pressed the Nokia Drop button on the Firefox browser.

When I view the captured traces in the Network Monitor, I see firefox.exe interacting with drop.nokia.com over a TLS connection (which I've no idea how to decode: I'd need the certificate and the session keys, and I don't think the latter is possible).

In any case, the Nokia people can get in touch with me if they want at my user name + ovi.com and I'll send them the Microsoft captures. Or, if they can work it out, tell me how to provide them with a decrypted TLS conversation with the Microsoft tools, and I'll do that for them.

hi Paivi,

i have 111.030.0609 symbian belle on N8

nokia drop 1.4.12072 connect

firefox 10.0.2 with drop plugin 1.4.10127

chrome 17.0.963.56 plugin 1.3

nokia store 3.22.054 login as morici11 OK

Thanks again

Another scenario that does not function is the Ovi store integration. How is this supposed to work?

I've logged on at the Ovi store in my PC's firefox web browser using the same credentials as with the Nokia Drop application running on my N8. I have configured my device and Symbian version on the Ovi store web interface on my PC. I choose an application and hit the download button: I am still only offered the choice of an SMS installation or via the Nokia Suite (but since Nokia Suite is not running at the moment on my PC, that option cannot be selected). I was expecting that there would be a third choice, something like "Install this application to your device with Nokia Drop". What should I expect?

I've the same problem too guys since I've updated my N8 to Belle!
Nokia drop client version 1.4.12072
Firefox version 10.0.2
Nokia drop Firefox extension version 1.4.10127

same here..:(

hi,

i try with Anna 022.014
025.007
Belle 111.030.607
111.030.609

I have the same result

See my further comments at http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-drop/bugreport/49079/drop-1-4-shows...

Even when the latest Drop on Belle is connecting via WiFi according to the WiFi icon on the upper system bar on any other screen, the Drop application screen's top bar shows a cellular connection.

other

Drop can be installed only using Data Mobile while smart installer don't run with wifi

For your information: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-drop/discussion/49361/installation-...

There is one fix delivered to production. Could you try now? And if it is not working, please inform us.

And what comes to that icon which is not shown correctly, that´s known error and have been reported to relevant team.

Päivi

Hi!

Good to hear that extensions are working now.

BR,
Päivi

Yeah...it's working now ... Thanks Paivi

O.K., as the original poster I'm late to this party: this evening I clicked the Firefox/Nokia Drop button, expecting a red exclamation mark, but it actually worked, i.e. it opened the Nokia Drop web page. Since I like the list of recent downloads, I installed the Drop 1.3.1 app from the Ovi store, and so far everything works as expected. Bravo! I really appreciate the work of the Nokia Gnomes in getting this useful service back on its feet.

Now, one more idea, to make the service work in both directions: is there some way that the Firefox extension could be the recipient for stuff sent via the "Send" menu choice in most Symbian applications? WWW Links, pictures, multimedia, etc., are obvious, but contacts and schedule items, in the form of formatted files that would open any applications that the browser knows about, could also be accommodated.

hi , i have n8 but nokia drop latest version is nt working on my nokia n8 belle updated version. not showing? working sending any thing

A few weeks ago I was obliged to do a factory restore on my N8.

I re-installed the Drop application from Betalabs, as well as the latest Firefox extension on Firefox 13.x.

No luck: the Belle application shows a green connection light when I authenticate with my Nokia account, but the Firefox extension's button does not give any feedback nor does any action when pressed.

So I've un-installed both parts of this application. There may be some kind of firewall problem--given that there's the Windows 7 firewall and the symmetric/SPI firewall on my router.

Short of having lots of time and the appropriate network traffic analysis tools, I've more or less given up this application. Emailing myself URLs etc. is not so bad after all.

I find it bizarre that Nokia didn't design the notification protocol to run just over the usual HTTP/HTTPS transactions andports--that would have been less complicated for the end user, since most firewalls, transparent proxies, etc., in the data path already know what to do with HTTP/HTTPS.

This trial has ended!
