Update impossible:
I had installed the German 3.0 Beta, download date Dec. 4, 2010 - build no. unknown. On Dec. 10, 2010 an update was provided to v.3.0.0.271 Beta. I have tried to process the update three times (Dec. 10, 11 and today), but the new version could not be installed due to certification error. I must remove the currently installed version to be able to install the present Beta.

This is most likely caused by an expired root certificate in your certificate store. Normally Ovi Suite should ignore expired certificates, and use the most recent one, but both for connecting to Ovi (via SSL) and for verifying a download the software can be caught out by an older version of a certificate.
I have positively verified this for the Ovi connection error, which went away after removing two expired "GTE CyberTrust Root" certificates from my store (via Internet Explorer -> Extras -> Options -> Contents -> Certificates -> Trusted Root Certificates).
I did not yet confirm this for the download error you describe above, but it is quite likely that this is caused by an expired "Verisign" certificate in your store (not exactly sure which one).
[Thanks to the Ovi team for a helpful hint. :-)]
