Nokia Suite 3.8.10 Beta for Windows

Beta (Likely to graduate to a commercial product.)

Can't connect my N8 to Ovi Suite any more

2010-11-10 @ 00:47 by mtreasure
I installed the new 3.0 Ovi Suite and am having problems. My PC no longer recognises when my N8 is connected so am unable to sync or perform software update checks. I've run repair, reinstalled, rebooted etc and nothing works. I didn't have this particular problem using the latest commercial version.

Hi,
Btw, in Ovi Suite Options do you have your N8 in your Own Devices? If yes, then try first to remove it from there (there is an option available) and then introduce the device again back to Ovi Suite.

In case this is an issue on the driver level...
Did you repaired your connectivity driver? Repairing Ovi suite doesn't much touch the driver at all. You can find Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver from Control Panel -> Programs & Features.

Please let us know if these helped at all.

I had previously tried repairing the Cable Driver but had no results so have followed your advice above with the following results:

The N8 was listed in own devices from a previous Ovi Suite installation. As per your suggestion, I removed the device and reconnected the N8 to my laptop while running Ovi Suite. Nothing happened. The phone was not recognised as being connected and Windows does not attempt to scan for new hardware. There is now no device listed in Own Devices.

I attemtped to repair the Cable Driver again through Control Panel. The wizard stated the process had finished so attempted to connect the N8, and still nothing.

I have been able to get Ovi Suite to recognise the N8 through Bluetooth and successfully synced contacts etc and the device is then shown in Own Devices. It just refused to connect via the cable.

The day I got my N8, I connected it to Ovi Suite and it immediately attemtped to install drivers. Most of them failed, but some installed OK. I rebooted, repaired the Cable Drivers and reconnected. Some additional drivers installed and I was then able to sync some things. On the next few connections, Ovi Suite would report a failure to install support software and there is definitely a driver issue gooing back here as Ovi Player won't recognise the N8 either so I cannot sync my music across. Trying to sync music through Ovi Suite would always fail. I never had a single problem with syncing etc with my N97.

I am still unable to get Ovi or my laptop to recognise when my N8 is connected, so am somewhat annoyed. I have tried uninstalling it all and reinstalling and this makes no difference.

One driver I know fails is the MTP driver. Windows keeps saying the device was disconnected but it wasn't. Any ideas?

Nothing shows in Windows Device Manager unless I change the phone to Mass Storage, the E & F drives will show. If in Ovi Suite Mode or Media Transfer, nothing shows in Device Manager.

PLEASE help to fix this.

Thanks!

Thought I'd post this info in case it comes in useful:

Hi, thanks for all the details. Very good information.
I am sure we are able to sort this out. Please hang in there...

Hi, to analyse this further we'd need your help on following:
- Close down OVI Suite.
- Take a screen shots from Windows Device Manager (snapshot when connected in Media Transfer and in Ovi Suite mode). We are especially interested of the following: Portable, Unknown and Wireless Communication device status.
- In addition to those screen shots we would need also following files:
o C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log
o C:\Windows\inf\setupapi.app.log

Please check "Bug reports" side how to deliver thise to us.

Everything submitted this evening as requested. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for your help.

I have installed the new 3.x beta and still have the same problems connecting my N8 to my PC. Ovi & Windows still refuses to recognise my N8 is connected if in Media Transfer or Ovi Suite Mode. I still have to manually drag music across in mass storage mode and sync the rest via bluetooth.

Is there any progress from all the information I submitted end of last week please as this problem is really annoying me now. Could there be a problem with the handset itself?

Just so you are aware, I installed the new 3.0.0.254 beta this evening and it made no difference. Same problems as before. Have you managed to identify anything from what I have sent you?

Thanks in advance.

Matt

Hi, we have been able to identify the problem. At the moment we are figuring out the feasible solution how to repair your specific status (and at the same time how to prevent such issue for happening again). The problem was found from your Windows registry settings.
We apology this inconvenience but we have not encountered this problem before and therefore we want to be sure about the fix before providing it to you.
Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for the update. I look forward to hearing from you regarding a fix. Thanks again.

I have recently got a N8 as well. Ovi Suite has problems installing off the cd, always seems to fail on the instalation - still runs afterwards, but the fact that is fails on a few components is worrying. Then once in ovi suite, there are problems with the updates, updating the phone software downloads fine, but when it resets the power of the phone it always loses the usb connection as well and fails, wants to start instalation all over again. Also the Need for Speed update always gets a download error as it hits about 8 megs. I have tried both of these on different days resetting everyhting, checking all connections, but they bother always fail in the same places.

Any help would be appreciated

Hi Aklehto, any news on how things are progressing?

Thanks, Matt

Nokia N8-00

Hi Matt, unfortunately there are no good news to offer...
Based on the background info:
- Ovi Suite is working okay with your N97 and E71, right?
- Your cable is working fine with those other devices, right?
- Changing USB port (and executing "Add new device") makes no difference, right?
- Your N8 has the same problem on another PC, right?

Only advice I can offer, if the above mentioned are correct, is you to take your device to Nokia service point (or similar) and request them to test the device and especially it's USB capability.
You could reinstall your Windows but I believe it won't make any difference if the device doesn't work on another PC.
I am sorry about this and that it has been taken a while to troubleshoot.
If you still come up with some additional detail that you think would make any difference then please don't hesitate to bring it up as soon as possible.
Again, my apologies.

I had a feeling you were going to say that :-(

I went into my retailer on Friday morning to discuss my options with them and was informed that I was 2 days outside the exchange period on the handset and the only option I now have available is to send it away for repair which is going to be a 28 day turn around.

had I taken the device back to the retailer when this problem arose, they said they would have given me a replacement there and then. I believe my nearest Nokia Care Point is 100+ miles round-trip away so this is not an option.

Any suggestions?

Matt

Hi Matt, doesn't sound good. We'll contact you offline about this.

Thank you!

Nokia N8-00

wolf-moon,

Could you send us your system information and the log files in case of Need for speed download error (instructions can be found <a href="http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-ovi-suite-3-0-beta-by-invitation/bu...) and submit those with the detailed error reporting form.

I installed new OVI Suite 3 and have the similar problem. OVI Suite no more recognises my N8. Fist time I connected N8, my XP tried to install several new drivers. Most of those installations failed. I can use N8 in USB-mode but OVI Suite fails to connect.
1)I removed Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver in Control Panel
2)Restarted OVI Suite and selected Add new device, connected N8 in Nokia Ovi Suite mode
==> Ovi suite recognises N8, but says that is not in Ovi Suite mode!
So what should I do?

Hi, you should not have removed Connectivity Cable Driver, instead repaired it.
Okay, I think the easiest way forward is to reinstall/repair Ovi Suite in-order to get the Connectivity Cable Driver re-installed.
In the first place your device drivers were not properly installed (since they failed) and as an effect of that the device connectivity was not working. To have proper connectivity the drivers need to get installed. Removing the driver package is not helping because there is no way to reinstall the drivers after that.
So, please get the Connectivity Cable Driver installed back and Ovi Suite up and running. Once those are available (check from Control Panel that CCD is there) you can execute "Add new device" procedure from Ovi Suite. Don't plug your USB cable in to your device before that. Now the USB driver installation starts... wait patiently that all the drivers (there are close to 10 of those) gets installed and after that reboot your PC (disconnect the USB). Restart Ovi Suite and connect your device again. Now everything should be fine.
Please let us know...

I repaired OVI suite & booted and CCD reappeared.
Add new device worked now and installed N8 back and connected.
Why did this not succeed at the first time? Something should be done before OVI 3 version installation?

I have the same problem on my N8, i can't connect to Ovi Suite via USB anymore. It keeps on saying that it is not in Ovi Suite Mode. I think Windows's "portable devices" settings and drivers are messing around and Ovi can't recognize the device anymore.
Please let me know if you find a solution, it's pretty ugly, i can't synchronize everything via bluetooth, it will take forever.

Same here. Beta update no different

I made the mistake of upgrading and same issues. Thought it was just my VMWare needing new Windows drivers.

Product team response

@buhuhilus, HSE2 & imnawang:
Could you try to unregister your phone via the settings of Nokia Ovi Suite and then add it back via "Add new device", please? If that does not help, you propably have a problem with the drivers and you may need to uninstall those to get them re-installed properly.

Phone isn't registered in the first place. It does not see the connection. Same on the lap top and thats vista 64.

Both computers see the connection thou. I can download photos and explore phone from vista on both pcs, but appart from an early version of ovi the latest versions simply dont see the connection. Means i can't back the phone up, and we all know what that means.
A google search reveals that this issue is pretty wide spread.
We need to be able to back the phone up asap.
So in short the is nothing wrong with the pc seeing phone type and connection. While vista is making the connection ovi is not. The N8 knows its connected in suite mode, and if you try to sellect mass storage it keeps going back to ovi suite. Seems like its a communication issue with some devices a pc combinations.

that is meant to read phone is not registered in ovi so cant be removed.

I tried logging out of Ovi Suite and logging back in but that didn't do anything. If I put my N8 in Mass Storage mode, I am able to access the phone and all the associated drives (internal, e drive, and microSD) through Windows Explorer. If I put the N8 in Ovi Suite mode, then no phone can be detected on Ovi Suite but the Windows XP Pro's add/remove icon on the task bar shows that the phone is connected but not running on 2.0 USB.

OK. I plugged in my N79 to my machine. It recognized it but no Ovi Suite support for the N79. Then I disconnected the N79 and then plugged in the N8 and it was able to pick it up and I was able to back up my phone. This was most likely a Windows driver issue. Thanks.

I installed the latest OVI Suite beta version which I thought had fixed my N8 USB connection problems. Unfortunately it hasn't. I've only had this issue since I upgraded to OVI V3.0.0284.I downloaded the latest beta version 3.0.0.290 and did the following:-

I downloaded 3.0.0.290 on 1/2/2011, then followed the procedure given by
MahayV (Nokia Technical Expert) from another thread:-

Uninstall the following Programs, from Control Panel -> Programs and Features or Add or Remove Programs.
Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver
Nokia Ovi Suite
PC Connectivity Solution

Later download and install the latest OVi Suite from the Nokia.com/support.

After OVi Suite installation, restart your PC, disconnect your internet from PC and connect your mobile to the PC. This is to prevent the PC searching for a new drivers from internet. OVi suite has all the required drivers for all the nokia phones available in market.

Once all the required drivers are installed automatically, you try connecting the mobile by selecting
'Connect your device' from the bottom left on the OVi suite screen. You should be able to connect your device now.

This was also the procedure that Nokia Technical support took me through with V3.0.0.284 which worked only until next pc power up / phone connect. . I'm running WinXP with SP3 and my mobile is the N8 with software level 011.012

This was my post from Nokia previous discussion thread. Since then I've connected other devices to my usb ports and then re-connected my N8.....
back to the original USB problem. I'm no further forward and getting very frustrated as Nokia level 2 technical support have now closed this.
Pls help.

I have also downloaded the latest Ovi Suite (3.0.0.290) and have issues connecting to my N8. It prompts me to "Select the Nokia Ovi Suite USB mode" although the N8 automatically goes into that mode when connected and Ovi Suite is running. I made sure I removed the sync relationship with Windows Media Player (which works great for media). I have re-installed the Ovi Suite, and tried everything I can think of. Very, very frustrating, and will be using WMP for good unless this can be resolved.

Ok folks, I can't say this was the exact fix, but this is how I got my Ovi Suite to work with my N8.

I downloaded Nokia Software Updater, to check when the new firmware arrives. After I connected it, Microsoft started installing drivers for the N8 (this had happened a lot before). I then updated the videos (a subtitle support update) and checked for updates, etc.

Today, I start up Ovi Suite, and within seconds, I see my N8 recognized.

So, try Nokia Software Updater, and see if that helps with Ovi Suite.

What really worked for me:
1- Uninstall ovi.
2- Uninstall N8 driver from device manager.
3- Use registry optimization program to delete related files in the registry (works automatically).
4- Reinstall ovi.
5- Start OVI programm and connect the phone (follow instruction).
6- It should work for you, it worked for me.
GOOD LUCK

What really worked for me:
1- Uninstall ovi
2- Uninstall connectivity driver
3- Install PC-suite
4- be happy (for N8 users, some older version seams to work fine with N8)

Sorry Nokia, after several trials of OVI-suite over the last years. I came to the conclusion, the biggest improvement to the OVI suite is to don't use it!

Before the OVI Suite will be in a usable condition the last Symbian phone was sold ages ago. So, my proposal is to axe the OVI Suite project, its a waste in time and money, and give the PC-suite free again for N8 usage.

having same trouble with my n8 it says it is connected in ovi suite mode but doesn`t show in my pc

Well the fix for me is PC suite. Even though its not meant to work with the N8- it does. I have two PC and the same thing has happened to both so Ovi is gone now. Problem fixed.

Hello, could anone help please?

My N8 doesnt connect to my laptop or OVI suite, all that happens is the phone says "connect USB cable to device" after 10-15 seconds.

Also, is it possible to get music that has been sent to the N8 by bluetooth on to the music player?
The music is only on the message that appears when its sent.

Thanks very much for any help!

I'm having the same issue.
I bet my problem is about the pc not recognising the device properly.
In fact, Nokia N8 appears as a MP3 Player in the computer panel and the same happens in Ovi Suite suggesting me to change settings in my N8 and set the Ovi Suite connection.
Any help?
thank you

Heloo every one

Hi Dr_ahmed.Gaber,
Please reinstall Nokia Suite 3.2.66.0 beta and restart your computer.
If it does not work either. Try to reboot your phone and then connect it to your PC.
Hope it works!

Thanks,

taza99.

No it didn`t.
so i had to reset my phone to factory settings<although it had connected perfectly to my pc....another problem came out
COULD NOT install the new anna update..................

can u provide ore help plz !!!

I was struggling with the USB (N8) connection being accepted also after the recent Nokia Suite upgrade. After trying many of the suggestions i got it fixed by basically following elements of the following instructions already posted - #24Re: 03-12-2010 13:55 aklehto. I will expand in slightly more detail-
I removed all Nokia elements via the control panel
Installed again.
Plugged in my N8.
(At this point I went wrong the first time and expected the Nokia Suite to do all the work/installing. Seeing Microsoft Wizards as a hinderence and shutting them down)
Do not shut them down.
Accept all their prompts and install all the drivers (ten or so as Aklehto suggests!). You may like me get Microsoft warnings telling you this is not in their opinion a trusted source, ignore them and continue installation.

Another finding is when I was having problems initially with my PC and suspected my handset I tried it on my Netbook (never connected to this before so had to download Nokia suite) and it worked first time as expected with none of the Microsoft interuptions!I very rarely/never
install updates to this Netbook! The PC however I install Microsoft updates at regular times. Could this have been the reason it was so easy on my Netbook and a bit more trouble on my PC?

Hello! Can anyone please help me? When i "cleaned" the E: root of my Nokia N8 silver, i deleted 3 files: Ovi Installer, Music Installer Ovi Suite (both .exe). Now, my PC cant recognize the N8 on Ovi Suite Mode! Please somebody upload this files and send me (Through a link on 4shared, Dropbox, or other). I really cant do the Hard Reset now! Thanks.

GUYS IVE FOUND A SOLUTION!!!!
Goto start>in search type ''Msconfig''>services and arrange by name then look for a program called ''Service Layer'' and make sure it is enabled if it aint then tick mark it and reboot your PC again Connect Your Device and OLA your Device will be Connected!

SAY THANKS
