Ovi Suite thinks I'm using maps

2011-06-14 @ 14:24 by asturcon3
Ovi Suite, says that I have Maps in use on my device. Obviously, it's not.

After resetting the device, the issue is still the same.

Spanish E7, PR1.1, 014.002.00.01, RM-626
Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40beta

Click on the compass, connecting to the maps service... maps in use on your device (back-translated from spanish)

Same problem with N8 and also with the previous version of Ovi Suite, Maps 3.07.

Ok, this issue is Maps-related, alreay posted and solved there. Simply enter to Maps then exit and reconnect the device to Ovi Suite. Now it works.

Hi Asturcon

There has been this kind of problems with earlier Maps app 3.07 versions. Which Maps app 3.07 version you're using? Can you update to the latest 3.07 from beta labs and try this again?

Jaakko

Hi Jakko.
I have the last one available, 3.07 11 wk17 b04 :)

Hi Jaakko.

I'm using all up to date software, including maps which is v3.07 11wk15 b01

As I understand the issue, it's related to a lock being left in place because of a dirty exit from maps (reboot, hangs, bug, who knows). As I posted before, running again maps and then exit solved the issue. I haven't noticed this behaviour early with previous ovi suite/maps releases, but who knows.

Anyway, again, my ovi suite is now working as expected. Thanks.

I solved it by "killing" maps app with TaskMan. Thanks, asturcon3

I've got the latest version, 3.1.1.65, of Ovi Suite, but since two or three versions back I cannot open the maps interface, when I try to connect my N8 to Maps it keeps saying "Maps application is running in your device. Close Maps to continue"

this needs to be fixed.

or at the very very least the message changed to say that maps may be running in the background.

it's just completely unprofessional. you can't expect people to google everything.

'it just works' - something to aspire to.

Solved: try "killing" maps app with TaskMan, then connect your device to Ovi Suite. Aparently it's a problem with Maps application.

E52 device, same bug. I updated everything to the official versions, no such luck. Killing the application from task manager is the solution that I saw several time posted here, but where is task manager in E52? Besides, the problem persists if i try immediately after restarting the phone.

It is not the task manager (which I don't know where it is in your phone), but TaskMan, an application you can buy in Ovi Store:

http://store.ovi.com/content/2615

Download it and install it. Open Maps and then kill it with TaskMan. Kill it, don't just close it. It will work.

Its an Ovi Maps issue, since it doesn't close (Nokia sees this bug as a feature...).

See map thread for multiple workarounds.

One is to open and close maps.

One is to simply boot the phone and connect before starting Maps.

Thank you for the replies.
I found TaskMan, installed it and, obviously, saw no Maps running. Tried to run it and then kill it - no use. And of course on E52 it does exit completely once you close it.
But then I found the reason while trying to manually backup the maps database before hacking it further. My microsd card went bad for whatever reason (thanks, SanDisk) and files in positions higher than e:/cities/diskcache/1/4 didn't even copy.
New card - problem gone.
Sorry, Nokia, I doubted you for about 2 hours there.

The question is Maps doesn't really close completely when you close it. As many other apps, it stays inactive in the background. That is why you need to kill it with TaskMan, it prevents any app from standing by

Any one having similar observation?

I have a similar problem.
Ovi Suite don't display installed map and I can't delete it to free space on memory card.
I have a Nokia E55 and Windows XP with the new Ovi Suite 3.1.1 Beta.

Could someone help us?!

Hi

Understood that you've mass mem and mem card in your E55? Which drive is selected in your maps app? The same drive should be selected in Ovi Suite Options > Maps

Jaakko

Hi Jaakko.

I use a mem card for maps and voices in my E55 and I select the mem card from Options -> Maps but when I open Maps in Ovi Suite and select my device, I see only the voices that I downloded from Ovi Suite before the update to Beta version.
I don't see the map of Italy and other maps that I want to delete because I don't use anymore...

What's happened?!

when i click on Maps, it say the app is running on my device, but its not! I restart my N8 and have the same problem... can't use the Maps loader...

Hi

There has been this kind of problems with first Maps app 3.07 versions. What is your maps app version? Can you update your maps app to the latest version from beta labs and try to reproduce this?

Jaakko

My Map app version is V3.07 11wk17 b04. i think this is the newest, not? tks

I think there are several versions of 3.07. For example my maps app version is now v3.06 10wk46 b01

You can check that information (at least in 3.06) from ? > Information about Maps app > Versions

Anyway we'll try to reproduce this in our end.

I am having the same problem on a C7 using Ovi Maps 3.07(150)

i have the problem too, i have the mmost recently maps app version, downloaded from here beta labs, this is not good

I have this problem too. on my N8 running maps 3.07 11wk17 b04

it's all a bit mysterious. i faffed about for a bit and it eventually told me there were map updates available and installed them. but it only took a second. not like a full map update. and the map version didn't change it was and is 00.02.42.122

it now works as i imagine it was intended to.

It seems the update was for the ovi suite I tried to get my phone to update then restarted the ovi suite and it updated from 3.1.1.40 to 3.1.1.48 and now it's working fine.

no i already had the ovi suite update. This was specifically a maps update.

I wondered if it was maybe a voice update.

i also have the same problem, ovi suite says the same for me, that "app is running on my device, close it first"

Maybe it was a combination thing as mine was definitely only an update to Ovi suite. My Maps would not update.

with 3.1.1.75 this problem is now getting worse.

if i click retry it tells me there has been a problem and i should restart or reinstall.

Ovi Suite 3.1.1.40 "Can't find maps on your device." No problem with prior beta versions of Ovi Suite. Unhacked Nokia N8 connecting via Bluetooth. I follow the instructions to disconnect the phone (close the Bluetooth connection), run Ovi Maps for awhile, then reconnect. Still no change. Ovi Maps and voice guidance runs fine on the phone. Data files are loaded to Mass Memory.

100% repeatable. This just seems to be what this version of Ovi Suite does. As I say, I didn't have this problem with the prior beta.

Hi,
Thank you for your feedback.
If it is still reproducible with latest version we would need log files to be able to analyze this in more detail. Kindly fill the form provided in the link below and send it us. Instructions(Collecting logs) are available in the form. http://tiny.cc/ja40z

Delete the folder cities from your mass memory
also remove the file qf

Then start Nokia maps on your phone, the cities file will be re-created
Close Nokia maps on the phone.
Connect your phone to your computer.
You should now be able to update maps , and redownload the maps.

(Obs. deleting cities and qf will delete all current map on the phone)

@JudaZ
After starting Maps, enter the map and let it download a few bytes, and then exit. This assures that all structures are in place.

N8 RM-596 059C9X8 Anna 022.014 (022.014.251.05) Win7

Just installed the Beta. When I tried to check Maps it said: "There seems to be a map running on the device" with a button "try again". Maps was not activated on the phone.
Mapspart of Nokia Suite did not start.

The same here!!

When going in to Maps section in new Nokia suite the program says that the maps is running in my device and asks to shut it down before it can continue. Well I can not see the maps running in my N8.

This same bug has been also before. I think it was somewhere when the maps version was changed. Then it was solved. I can not remember the solution. but now the same problem occurs again.

btw

The window in Bug reporting is too small, I can not see the "Submit" button.
And not any scrolling bars.

So I have to write my comments here.

N8, best ever!

My technical setup:
N8-00 RM-596 Anna 022.014, win7
Nokia Maps v 3.08 11wk34b01, map version 0.2.44.110, usb connection

When I restarted Nokia Suite Beta it worked to start maps.

This is a known bug in Maps, that they call a "feature"(!)
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-07/bugreport/28356...
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/ovi-maps-for-mobile-v3-07/bugreport/29020...

Ullikoch gave this workaround in posting #16 in the later.
"When I get this "App is running ..." message I close OviSuite, start Maps on my mobile, close Maps on my mobile, open OviSuite again and maps download works fine ."

Or you could reboot the phone.

The bug ....ehh feature... is that Maps is NOT closed when Exit is requested, it is merely hidden...

You CAN force the processes down with a task manager though.

Best Regards
Eske Rahn

does this maps "feature" have anything to do with recoding our gps locations without us knowing (like the iphone)?

@ezzykoko
Well we are getting a bit off topic here, I think this discussion should be in a Maps-forum. But if you see the satellite icon on, well then it would be easy to log the true position. But I don't think they keep GPS on, due to the heavy load on the battery. But they could log the geocoded positions of the WiFi's recognised to give an rough position-log.

Best Regards
Eske Rahn

mine still does this too.

Just installed Nokia Suite 3.2 beta. I also got the "maps already running on device" error upon running Nokia Suite the first time. I checked the task manager and for the GPS icon and Maps was definitely not running. However, after shutting down and restarting Nokia Suite, I was able to view and update the Maps normally. I will report if this problem recurs.

Ben (N8 14.002 Maps 3.08 Suite 3.2)

@BenAnderson
Well even though you don't see it in the task list, and the gps icon isn't on, it IS still running! But as processes only, not as a visible app. This begun on 3.06 (I think) with "ODNPServer_0x2001A983.exe" and "s2gvariantserv.exe", and got worse with 3.07...
Follow links in posting #39 for some threads on the subject.

Same here, with Nokia C7. Using Maps 3.08 with Weather, downloaded here on Nokia Beta Labs.

@EskeRahn Thanks for the info. Seems like sloppy programming to leave processes running when no app is using them. Just slows down the system and eats battery. I'm sure Maps starts up faster, but with the limited resources on a cell phone (compared to a desktop computer), this will have negative results, as we have seen with Suite.

Ben

@BenAnderson
I agree, and the official excuse for the 'feature' is the speed up, as you guessed.
I don't mind the hiding as a feature, if it was something the user could select or deselect in settings. "Hide or Exit on close"

Best Regards
Eske Rahn

Restart the computer, phone etc. solved the problem. Thanks!

N8, best ever!

you only have to restart the phone not the computer. but it's still not acceptable for a retail product.

Nokia Maps cannot connect.

Couldn't connect to the service

using new Nokia Suite 3.2.64 Beta

Model: N8

Me too with N8 Anna.
Just disconnect your N8 from your PC and quit Nokia Suite.
Then browse with your N8 by FileBrowser to E:Cities and delete "lock_map" file.
Finally, connect your N8 to your PC and start Nokia Suite again.
Nokia Maps will be connect it between your PC and your device.

@luisavino

thanks for this hint. I had the same issue

Strange, Nokia Suite told me that Nokia Maps is running on the phone but it was not in use...

Installation on Win 7 64K went smoothly.

When I tried th Maps update on my E71, it failed on the initial attempt, but upon retrying, it installed the latest map & voice files without any problem.

Which Maps version do you have in device? Check the version in device Maps application.
