Our Photo Map Plugin is one result of an already earlier research project of NRC. As the user-benefit is clear and it demonstrates the plugin architecture provided by MeeGo, we decided to make the plugin accessible at BetaLabs.
The plugin supports photo re-living as well as collocated sharing experience. We wanted to support Gallery with an extension, instead of building yet another stand-alone application to the application grid.
Both GPS and magnetometer, which provide the location and orientation metadata to photos, have environment-dependent accuracy variation. The accuracy of the placement of photos in the map view is dependent on this variation. Also, if there is no GPS fix achieved, the photos may appear in a location resulting from cellular network based location information. While not a perfect solution, this still helps and speeds up placing the photo manually more correctly, if you so wish.
