Ovi Suite 3.0.0.290 (WinXP SP3 32 bit) offered me firmware update 510.21.009 for my E71, but it failed somewhere in the middle of the update. The E71 seems to run the new firmware code now, but Ovi Suite 3.0.0.290 is unable to re-install the firmware cleanly because it says the USB connection is flapping. It's also not possible to install the two helper utilities.
When I tried reinstallation of Ovi Suite I learned that there's the new version 3.1.0.86. Why doesn't Ovi Suite 3.0.0.290 tell me that and insists its the recent version?
However, a fresh install of Ovi Suite 3.1.0.86 has the same USB problem.
I've learned that a lot people have this problem with "instable" USB connection, and the Nokia Software Updater was recommended.
Other operations over USB (like backup, or syncing) work just fine. But when it comes to uploading data to the phone (installing applications, upgrading firmware), that seems to be a problem.
Fine, I downloaded and installed the recent version 3.0.383 yesterday, but it doesn't detect the E71 at all. Sometimes NSU says there's a USB problem, but most of the time it does "Detecting connected devices" for some seconds and then goes to the "Getting Started" screen and asking me to connect a phone to the computer.

Other people reported they could update their E71 just fine. I'm curious what they did different to get their phones detected by NSU. If that matters, the E71 is connected to a PC with just USB 1.1 (the computer doesn't have any USB 2.0 ports).
With the old firmware (500.21.009) there never were any USB problems. Looks like the new E71 firmware broke it's own USB port. Will that phone ever be usable again?
