Accuracy - signal processing improvement might help?

Went for a stroll today. I put the N95 in my pants pocket. I have room pants, so it is not really firmly attached to my thigh.

I counted 1013 steps (I walked out 500 and back 513)

StepCounter gave me:
5219 - 4117 = 1102 steps.

So it measured about 10% too high.

Blame the pants, or can the signal processing be improved. Perhaps with an adaptive band-pass filter that can understand the rhythm of walking?
