Since OVI is Jabber-based IM protocol, and the very Jabber is able to comunicate with other IM protocols, it is possible to add MSN, ICQ etc. contacts to your OVI account, just like you can add the Yahoo! messenger contacts to your MSN account and vice versa.
The secret is that you must register with the "transports" at one or more public Jabber servers.
1. Download and install Jabber client "Psi" http://psi-im.org/ onto your PC http://psi-im.org/ or the "talkonaut" client onto your S60 device, and log in with your OVI account.
2. In the menu you find "service discovery" item, in the adress section type one of public Jabber servers name and click browse, here is a list of servers http://www.jabberes.org/servers/servers.html but not all of them work for public use, so you will have to serach for the working one. For the beginning I will specify msn.jabber.org.au for MSN, and icq.fsinf.at for ICQ.
3. When you're done with that, in the tree below you find the name of transport and double click on it. Enter your MSN/ICQ username and password and that's it. You will recive invitation from the Jabber server and accept it as a buddy.
Now, all your MSN/ICQ contacts should apear in the PSI client in the form username%hotmail.com@msn.jabber.org.au for MSN contacts and ICQ number@icq.fsinf.at for ICQ .
You can rename them into whatever you want, and you are free to uninstall the PSI client.
When you log in your OVI contacts aplication on the phone you will see all your MSN/ICQ buddies inside.
I still can't find the working Google talk transport, so if anyone finds it, I will appreciate it.
P.S.
It would be easier if Nokia installed these transports on it's own servers to make whole thing easier, so we don't have to beg other people for transports.

"When you log in your OVI contacts aplication on the phone you will see all your MSN/ICQ buddies inside."
...and in a couple of weeks you find that these contacts are not on the list anymore. And moreover, that they are deleted from your MSN/ICQ account.

You don't need any. Google talk is standard XMPP. And OC even have a special option for adding gtalk accounts directly.

1. I allready have them for a month, they did not disapear. They are not deleted from the accounts. Where did you see this? Sorry if you had problems, but this is the first time i heard this.
2. You don't understand me. Google talk contacts can be added into OVI, but not within your existing Gtalk account. The whole story is about that. Google talk is Jabber based, but stil another network.
So if you add your gtalk contacts into OC your friends will see you as different account, not the existing Gtalk user.
On the contrary, these MSN/ICQ contacts are seen as existing contacts in your friends clients.
So, let me be clear: I don't want my friends to see "double" me in their Gmail/gtalk clients, one Gtalk, the other OC. With the proper transport it is possible to log in as existing Gtalk user.

Ah, now I see what you mean! Having a "jabber-jabber" transport would certainly be a workaround for the problem of not being able to login to arbitrary jabber server from OC. Neat idea. Did not hear of a "jabber-jabber" transport but this does not mean there isn't any.
Your trick works. Thx a lot for the great contribution.
Btw, I'm contributing your method to Thailand Nokia community at

This is your credit :)
i keep putting off setting this up as i think the dev team will step in and tell us not to waste out time as they'll be officially adding it in the next update?
i really cannot understand why the dev team are so absent most of the time in this forum (ok so they're busy but the odd post once a week doesn't take much?).
this is a major development in OC yet no word officially about it? very odd?
just a quick thought. if the next update doesn't bring the universal support we are hoping for, i'm going to give the PSI method a go, but once its set up, if in the future OC supports msn/yahoo etc... can we easily remove our contacts from the public Jabber server?

Don't dream about it. They won't support other protocols, cause they want to have their own such as Blackberry messenger, but I doubt it woulud be that popular.
Unfortunately, Nokia is transforming from an inovator to a copycat.
So, if you want, you can delete the MSN contacts directly from OC, don't have to go to Psi. I suppose there is the same case with ICQ transport.
I really don't see the urgency to directly support other IM protocols, considering there are a number of free alternatives. Gtalk itself, it's jabber and it's not directly able to let you connect to multiple IM systems at the same time... though I understand gtalk is way more popular.
Having OVI provide the transports for AIM, MSN, etc, would be great, though.

To be honest, I don't use OC anymore, since there are more than great free apps like Fring. I used this "trick" with transports to add my MSN buddies to my Gtalk account, and I found it useful to share here with folks that like the very OC aplication, like I did at the first time.
Great aplication, integrated into OS, nice interface etc etc. What happenes? Nokia makes is only for "internal" use, among S60 users, people ask for supporting more protocols, the big boss won't listen and creates a surogat aplication in Nokia messaging (IM E75 beta) with so ugly interface. Sometime I got a feeling that some developers make ugly aplications on purpose, and never use them, as a matter of fact, but it's only me :)
And yes. It will be great if Nokia installs jabber transports on it's own servers for OC.
like you i no longer use OC, but i do like the interface and the product manager has hinted that transports might be added. i think your right about the big boss not listening!
More jabber servers around the globe

Yes developers, please grap that idea and implement it into next OC release.
I tried Nokia Messaging (and Nokia Social Messaging will be part of it) but i don't want to use it. a) I dont tell Nokia my password, i'm also not allowed to tell them the password for my business accounts, b) i don't want to pay a monthly fee for a service which is normally free for all, c) interface is extremly ugly, d) viewing HTML emails doesnt work if no images are in the mail and current default mail application can show HTML emails - just open the attached attachment.html and you see it in fullscreen.
Stop fighting with other Beta Labs application developers and make this app here to one of the best around the planet. I don't like fring (no integration into OS, buggy-looking interface, no geotagging) or Nimbuzz (no integration into OS, no geotagging) and others.
Comeon Nokia, we all know you can do it better! If marketing division wants to earn money with such apps to get their salary payed you could sell OC in Ovi Store, no monthly fee but onetime payment.
thank you all for your inputs , now i'm able to do cross platform messaging among (almost) all protocol
just to add some , just in case :
i 've used yahoo.jabin.org server for YM transport and its been beautifully smooth, after 2 minutes though. i dunno whether the delay is from ovi server or the jabin.org 's side
so, in PSI , i setup 3 transport
1. yahoo.jabin.org for ym
2. msn.jabber,org,au for msn
3.j2j.jabin.org ( inactive ) for nimbuzz
thank you
This was great, but i got one huge problem with it...
I mean it worked, but is like worked to much and it hanged my ovi contacts app...
How's this so?
Well, for starters, not only showed my msn contacts (currently about 200), it showed me all the contacts i've ever had on msn (close to 1000), what this do was to crash my ovi contacts app, i saw people i dont even remember on my contacts list (before it crashed)
Now im deleting everyone one by one on PSI so i can use Ovi Contacts again, is there a way to use a "transport" that doesnt recover all my previously deleted and blocked contacts?
Is there a way to delete a transport from PSI so it cleans my contacts list the way it was before adding all those contacts?
Dear Guru
I have tried ur tutorial , but i have problem
how can i connect ovi account into PSI???
thank you
As such you should start by setting up your OVI Account in Psi. You do not need a transport for your OVI account. You only need the transports for communicating with other IM versions like MSN, AIM, icq etc.

Hi all,
I've succesfully installed psi etc. and it works fine. But due to the low ram/memory of my N82 the ovi tab inside says always No enough Memory, close some applications and try again.. So my question is Can i delete some of my contacts which i dont want in ovi? But i dont want them to delete from msn..if i delete them from ovi.they will be blocked in msn.how can i solve this? It's an awesome tool anyway!!
Thank you
How can i Remove/Delete this psi? My phone crashes everytime when i open ovi..i only want my ovi contacts in ovi again.no msn..
Thank you very much
This solution is perfect, the only problem is all contacts are imported from msn...
but dont worry! is perfect
Thank you very much!
I found a solution to add only the important contacts from msn to ovi. First make a new msn like 'name'ovi@hotmail.com or something like that. Next add only a few contacts from your origin msn to it, i mean really few, like max 10 to 13 people and your phone wont crash after you make the protocol work for this second msn account made for ovi.

Moi,
No worries, I do hear what you're saying. I haven't commented to this particular thread, as there are many other threads discussing similar issue where I’ve added some notes.
Thus, I certainly know a lot of you would like be able to use other IM accounts as well. However, Ovi Contacts main role is to provide an option for those people who don’t yet own an IM address. There are other products out there that you can use for other IM accounts. Also, besides Ovi friends, it’s already possible to add your Gtalk friends to the friend list.

seems like a hell of a lot of work to get the 0.000001% of internet users who don't use IM to start? as you support gtalk, why not add facebooks xmpp service to the list.
at this moment in time, i have just under 100 contacts i can send instant messages to and only one person with an ovi account. i long for the day when i start to use OC again, but until then, the competition is just so much better.
come on Nokia, don't turn your back on your Connecting People slogan.
Moi,
Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately the Facebook XMPP service currently doesn't support federation, which means that it's not possible to add friends from Facebook to the Ovi Contacts friend list. Thus, tempting as this would be, at the moment we cannot bring the Facebook contacts to the client.

Hi,
Thanks for the great workaround. I works on my phone, but not completely.
All my ICQ-Contacs are shown as offline all the time. I can chat with them without problems, but I can't see who's online or offline.
Got any help for me?

How to we remove this "For the beginning I will specify msn.jabber.org.au for MSN" ??? I have over 250 contacts I don't want because it imported all my past contacts. I just want to delete all this stuff and stay with OVI. I do I rollback this stuff ?
This is a MUST function in China to import other IMs into ovi, as we cannot use msn or google talk in my Nokia X3-02, only ovi appears in the Messager icon.
