2009-03-02 @ 21:37 by stephan.danner
hi there,

first of all thanks for offering Ovi mail.

Can I access Ovi mail via mail client too? I've tried mail.app from mac os but it seems that Ovi refuses the connection.
*edit* Has anyone tried mail.app with Ovi mail yet? *edit*

The used settings are:
imap.mail.ovi,.com,
smtp.mail.ovi.com,
both ssl, port 993 for smtp

thanks and regs, stephan.danner

i tried mail.app too with both pop and imap, different adresses and ports. No connection.

Incoming email:
User name: you@ovi.com <mailto:you@ovi.com>
Password: *****
Incoming mail server: imap.mail.ovi.com
Mailbox type: IMAP 4
Security (ports) SSL/TLS
Port: Default

Outgoing email:
My email address: username@ovi.com <mailto:username@ovi.com>
User name: username@ovi.com <mailto:username@ovi.com>
Password: *****
Outgoing mail server: smtp.mail.ovi.com
Security (ports): SSL/TLS
Port: Default

I am on a Mac and had problems connecting to the mail servers using Mail.app.

However, using another email program for Mac called "Postbox" everything works perfectly (retrieval, send, folders, sync, etc.) with my @ovi.com IMAP account.

The IMAP settings mbrett posted are the same as mine except in Postbox, choose SSL and not TLS. Be sure 993 is your default incoming port.

Postbox is new and in currently in public beta, but I'm more pleased with it than Apple's mail.app after using it for the past month.

@stephan

for what it matters, and mybe you've already figured it out, port 993 is for imap/ssl. For smtp/ssl it could be 25, or 465

@speedgrapher: thx for the info

actually mail.app neither can connect to imap.mail.ovi.com nor to smtp.mail.ovi.com.

I'll give it a try, then --- I'm quite happy w/ using it w/ nokia messaging, though, that's why I hadn't configured it in my macbook

let you know if I find anything odd

I'm not a Mac user but was searching for the settings. I use Outlook 2007 on Windows XP SP3.

The following settings work for me:
Incoming email:
User name: username@ovi.com
Password: *****
Incoming mail server: imap.mail.ovi.com
Mailbox type: IMAP 4
Security (ports) SSL
Port: 993

Outgoing email:
My email address: username@ovi.com
User name: username@ovi.com
Password: *****
Outgoing mail server: smtp.mail.ovi.com
Security (ports): SSL
Port: 465.

With Outlook 2007, you need to click on the More Settings button for a new dialog box to appear, then select the Advanced tab to input the Security and Port settings.

Hope these work for your Mac email application.

@iangburnett

Thanks for the correction and appologies for the missing info.

Default works on my phone, but I'll use that info to set it up on Outlook Vista (2007) when I get home.

OK - here's how I did it on Leopart (though it should be the same in 10.4)

add account, imap, imap.mail.ovi.com, yourname@ovi.com, yourpass
it WILL complain it can't connect, just press continue again, it will use SSL then
for the smtp, smtp.mail.ovi.com, yourname@ovi.com, yourpass
same complain, press continue to get it using SSL

then when done, edit your account, edit the smtp server, make it use ONLY port 465 (default uses 25, 465, 587)

you're now ready to go.

thx speedgrapher but couldn't get it to work until now (but I also have to admit that I haven't spent too much time on int yet).
still neither can send nor receive mails in mail.app (10.5.6).

hi there,

finally i got it working. there seemed to be some login issues by mail.app but now it's working.
thx for the support,

regs, stephan.danner

speedgrapher's trick seems to work, but there is another problem:
mail.app keep saying me that Ovi server refuses my password, i have to retype it, refused, retype, refuse . . .
I am sure my password is the right one, it contain letter, capital letter, numbers and symbol for a total of 8 characters.
has anyone a clue

maxime

edit: now working, it was my fault, i put my_username as the username instead of my_username@ovi.com

I use Thunderbird and when i enter this configuration i this message: "Login to server imap.mail.ovi.com failed"
and i've an option to enter a new password!!!
what is this error???? :@

i managed to use it on my old macbook......i googled it out but im nt sure about what i used cz i sold my macbook....n switched to a windows laptop
