2010-12-17 @ 17:01 by cenarius4
it doesn't show me exactly where i am
i've an N8 that is updated with Ovi Maps 3.06 and when i choose the "My Position" option from the menu it shows me in a different place, in about 200-300 meters far from where i am ...
and if i leave it a lone for a while ... it shows me in other different place .. when i didn't actually move !
that happens sometimes but mostly .. am at the exact wrong place on the map
what's the problem ???

Do you use positioning methods "Assisted GPS" and "Integrated GPS" or only the last one ?
Do you have free view to the sky ?

thanks for asking ^_^
am actually using all methods but not the bluetooth method ...
waiting for your response and sorry for the late response !
what do you mean by free view to the sky ??

It means that you should be in a open air place, not near a building.

@cenarius4:
Note that GPS typically does not work indoors.

If satellite signals are not audible, then your phone will use Wi-Fi or Network based positioning instead and position is updated once per minute. If calculated position is done with "Network based" positioning nmethods, transparent red circle is drawn around current position icon indicating accuracy of the calculated position. If position is Wi-Fi based, there is no transparent red circle shown.

Then when you start Drive or Walk navigation, phone waits until position is calculated with GPS (and does not use Wi-Fi and Network based methods).

Hi,

You have ticked all the positioning methods.. if you do not get satellite fix then Maps application automatically take Network related positioning.. if problem with it then it takes WiFi positioning.

what you are saying it happens with Network related positioning.. sure it is not happening with satellite fix positioning.. keep the phone sometime in little open sky or near window.. My N8 get GPS fix in 5 seconds (cold start) and 2 seconds hot start..

I have this problem sometimes when I'm indoors by my window with my N8.

I have an N8 and I don't like how the version 3.06 works, everything apart from the position fix its great, but it's been very very difficult to get an adequate position fix on my new phone.

All my settings are correct, all the positioning methods are checked except bluetooth and the positioning server is set to automatic, connecting to sup.nokia.com and with my provider's 3g network as the access point.

The problem is that I do get a fix but it's always inaccurate, it locates me within 100m or even kilometers in occasions, and it's not even saying that the position its approximate. I know a-gps is not very precise but on my 5800, with the last version of 3.04 installed, I could get a pretty decent position and very accurate indeed.

The other problem is that once the app shows my "position" it stays at the same position no matter what, even though I'm moving in my car or walking.

I would like to downgrade to the stable v3.04 of Ovi Maps, as none of this issues were a problem when I used it on my 5800 or when I compare it head to head with other phones like the X6 also running 3.04.

I hope this could make my phone gps work as the others did and that this information is useful to you.

Im running fw v1.1 and ovi maps v3.06 10wk50 b03 with map v0.2.41.123

Hi Bruc,

on your N8 just long press on supl.nokia.com and set the priority and try ... And also try set the priority to the other server (long name) and then try... Hope it wil help.

Yes, I've already done that and works the same way... I've already downgraded to 3.04 and I'm going to try if it works properly. Thx

I did the installation and downloaded the maps, but the problem still persists, it's working as it did with v3.06, the positioning server is supl.nokia.com and all the settings are as I mentioned..

When trying to get driving directions it takes ages to get a gps fix, or it never gets one. And for my position it shows me 50-200m away and it doesn't even move when I do.

I hope there is a solution.. As of right now I'm going to try to reinstall the phone's firmware hoping it helps, I don't know what else to do. :(

Hi,

Now I feel that it is problem with your GPRS network..

Do few things .. a last try!

Press ZERO for long..
visit site google.com
if it is working means you have working connection.
Then make sure it is the same connection you are using in OVI maps in Setting, Internet and Network Destination.

Also the same connection in Setting, Application Setting, Positioning, Server setting, press supl.nokia.com and make sure the access point is the same what you are using for Web (Google.com) Make sure both the server settings have the same Access points..

it has to work or you have some major hardware problem..

It works, it gets connected, the gprs is ok. How do you know it is a hardware problem?
I've also tried with google maps and it gets a better position and it detects around 5 gps signals..

3310, 3315, 6600, 3230, N70-1, N95 8GB, Right Now N97 and N8.. (E7 Next)

Your GPRS must be working but the same access point should be there in all the above things.. If Google maps is working then it seems you do not have hardware problem. But now I will suggest take a total back up of Contacts and SMS and All the files on C: and E: ( N8 hard reset E: also.) and hard reset the phone.. then things should work.

regards

If I backup using ovi suite should all my apps be saved as well?

3310, 3315, 6600, 3230, N70-1, N95 8GB, Right Now N97 and N8.. (E7 Next)

No ... Your apps will not be saved... But some of the Z drive apps will not get formatted (like here & now app) You must be having those apps on your PC right?... Or you can download new versions of apps from web or OVI store. I will suggest back up settings also but dont restore it.. Restore contacts, SMS, and data files only.

Remember one thing if you hard reset the phone then the E: of the phone will also get formatted with C drive. So backup all the usefull files. Apps you will get anywer but not the valuable data. So back up all data before you hard reset.
i keep doing hard reset but my data is organised and I just move it on F: (card 8GB) and formart the phone.
All the best!

Thank you, one more thing: whats the code for the hard reset? and what will happen to the apps i bought from ovi store? will I be allowed to download them again for free?
Thanks for the help, hope that this way it works.
You are not having problems with your maps?

3310, 3315, 6600, 3230, N70-1, N95 8GB, Right Now N97 and N8.. (E7 Next)

The Code for hard Reset is *#7370# and the password is 12345

Bought applications are related to the IMEI of the phone i guess. after hard reset the IMEI will not change but you will need to have that serial or code to register the application again. I hope you will have it with you. I dont have idea about how you have bought those apps so dont know will it be free for download again.

I used to get problems but now the latest release works flawlessly on my N97 and N8 both. I think lesser than 0.01% people must be getting problems on the OVI Maps application ... but I am sure it can be sorted out.

after hard reset install the latest OVI Maps on your phone FIRST. then do the setting as per your wish.

I hope you will do all perfect.

regards

Experiencing the same problems here. Nokia N8. Ever since the upgrade (and the maps as well). Can't get a gps fix.

Hi ch4dwick,

Please read my above posts.. N8 gets GPS fix in 4 seconds. Almost instant in any cloudy conditions. Please read the things carefully above and do the nneddful changes... let me know if any more problem.

there was a problem with our cellular network. I guess I'll have to make do with wifi for now.

I have been having the exact same problems... drove me nuts. I even took the phone back and got a replacement under the early failure warranty, and same issue - identical!

Anyway, as it turns out, there was nothing wrong with the old phone, or the new one for that matter. I was using GPS indoors, and it doesn't work (I have a tin roof).

So, try taking it outside, and see if that makes a difference.

cheers,
philip.

PS - I know this has been said before, but thought I would reiterate it, as it is the exact issue that i was having. Loving the N8 now!

This trial has ended!
