A “ghost” Maps application is left in the background even upon exiting.

2011-04-16 @ 03:20 by cnahaiciuc
A “ghost” Maps application is left in the background even after the application has been closed. If the app is selected using a task manager (Handy Taskman), the process can be killed but not closed - as it should.
The stubbornly resident "ghost" may also be responsible for locking the 3G connection even when a known WiFi is detected.

Same problem .
"Ghost" maps (progfile smart2go.exe) uses 6005K . After Maps restart an additional Maps application (progfile map_0x20001F63.exe) appears using 22K .
Until now no way found to kill the "ghost" except restart .

same here, seems to drain te battery also.
the ghost app can only be closed by rebooting the phone.

You can close it with some applications like active file or fexplorer

Hi Nitin,
I didn't get memory problems because of this issue, but Nokia should be informed about it .

I do not know if it is caused by it, but in the last 2 days, on the morning when I go to work, the phone is able to fix only after a restart of the phone, in the afternoon it fixes without any problems. In the evening, I only use the phone to surf or OM to try to reproduce the issues of the betalabs users.

Hi All,

Incredible, how you guys are investigating. This is just great. Regarding the topic: what you might not see in your tools is, that the memory consumed by this is paged/swapped out. So it doesn’t consume actual memory, don’t worry. We’ve run extensive tests about this before going out to beta.
What concerns me is, that some of you mention that we would consume CPU. As said, it has been tested a lot and we don’t see this here in our labs. Can you give more details about this?

Best,

Rebekah

@rebekahjwarren
Hi,

I think we're loosing the focus here: yes, unquestionable you've done some extensive testing before launching the beta, HOWEVER, the "Ghost" trace (residual presence - or whatever you want to call it) it was clearly NOT supposed to stay resident upon exiting the app; so, a step forward would be admitting its UNWANTED presence, further investigating the root cause for this unexpected behavior and hopefully presenting a real solution.

I believe that's exactly what everybody here expects - finding various methods to kill it would be much like pushing the dirt under the rug.

Cheers!

Even after exiting the Drive / Maps application, the application 'App stop' lists 'Maps App' as 'live'

i have the same issue. after navigation is closed, the map gui is gone and upon exiting, maps is still running in the back ground. hope they fix this issue

@cnahaiciuc
You are unfortunately 100% wrong :).

It is indeed intended to have Maps as a background service running. So in your words: It is clearly supposed to stay there after exiting Maps. Memory is paged out, CPU consumption at 0, network and GPS ramped down after some moments. When you kill the process with some additional taskmanagers as described above you will notice a delayed start-up. So again, it is a wanted presence and enables a start-up in mapview in roughly a second.

@naveedaziz83
This sounds as if you have started Maps and Drive, so when you close Drive, the Maps application will remain. You can shut it down separately or leave there, it doesn't harm.

I will not comment on the GPS fix issue reported above to keep this posting's focus. But this is something we must check in more depth.

@erol, Can we have an option to disable these background services for the people who can live with the "a delayed start-up".

@Erol,

You are saying CPU consumption at 0,... but it is showing 6mb when long pressed in Jbaktaskman... I feel that is one of the reason phone hangs and crashes.. GPS fix is fast and not a problem for me at least.

@dshroar
Sorry to ask, but to me it doesn't add any value, why should we? Would make a lot of guys unhappy, who love the faster start-up.

@nitinule
So CPU is the guy who is doing battery draining computation, so if this number is at 0, I'm happy to hear this.
Memory consumption cannot cause freeze or hangs (actually), there must be something else causing this. Would you have more hints or situations, where you encounter freeze or application panics?
Great, that for you GPS is not an issue.

Hi, with new update the ghost app of maps is still there-and still only way to get rid of is to restart your phone.

I have this same ghost problem.
Right from booting the phone the Maps app is visible in App stop but not in the "Nokia task manager". You can't close this with App stop since it reappears every time you stop it.

Yet in addition to this after updating to the latest (4.5.) Maps 3.07 version my phone (N8, PR1.2) has started to connect to the internet when I'm not using the Maps application (the phone is in standby). This happens about once in hour and the connection is left open. This has happened often when there are no other apps running but the constant Maps app.

Yeh same here, after installing maps 3.07 first release my phone started connecting to wifi (my phone is set to : wifi only), cant really tell whats triggering it but it seems like maps is... like if i put my phone to charge via wall charger - then phone connects to wifi for a second and when i remove charging wire then it does it again... anyway stared to see this kind of behaviour after updateing to 3.07...

Two ghost PROCESSES (not an entire app) was also left with 3.06
"ODNPServer_0x2001A983.exe" 170.13Kb
"s2gvariantserv.exe" 44.48Kb
both of which can be terminated without ANY loss of functionality. (They reappear when maps is reopened)

It is possible to opt out of participating.
I guess that you already found the option under cogwheel, Extras, Participation and I participate.
The thing is that you have to be very light on the finger to un-tick this box and maybe point to it a little bit underneath the box.

maps app always running,despite stopping with app stop,when checked still running,also you can't opt out of participate in privacy settings,does anybody knowhow

@erol

One reason I agree with other users in not having mapsbackground always active ( or having an option to disable it)

In a couple of occasions I had the 3G connection active but apparently no applications requiring internet. I scrutinized the active processes and terminated the mapsbackground. The 3G connection was immediately terminated as well.. I am sure mapsbackground was still keeping the 3G connection alive...

The problem is not sistematically reproducible, but it occurred twice to me yesterday.

Maybe the process could be renamed something informative like Maps App helper, so that super users with task managers won't assume that it is a bug.

why can't i stop the maps app running,also can i opt out of participate under privacy settings, if so how

@CLTSchwarz

Good (and pragmatic) idea!
But please also add a setting like:
"Keep background apps running on exit for faster restart"
So the user could decide for them self.

Hi all,

Because of this thread, we re-ran our tests on this feature. Here are the results:

battery life test done with 2 N8 phones. Maps was opened in map mode in both and then closed, but in the other phone the mapsbackground process was manually killed and in the other one it was left running. At this point battery was fully charged in both devices.

After 18 hours the battery indicator was still showing full battery in both devices. Also according to Nokia Energy profiler, the estimated battery life was around 15 hours with 0.34 watt energy consumption.

Conclusion: Having mapsbackground process running does not drain battery.

So, something is causing a noticeable increase in battery consumption in this release (as you all have noticed it), but the background processes are not the culprit. We are still investigating. Thanks for the help and keep the feedback coming.

Close the background processes when the user closes any of the map applications. After I use Maps or Drive just once, a big chunk of memory stays locked up by different maps processes, especially Mapsbackground (6MB of ram wasted).

@tracy_rolling

Thanks for the test. Could you try doing the test slightly different:
A) Turn two fully charged identical phones on, in offline mode.
B) On ONE only, open OviMaps, display map, and exit maps asap.
C) Follow the consumption as you did.

There might be 'stuff' hidden, that not even a task-manager is allowed to see (like with the Nokia Drop), that still consumes power.

(The oflline-mode is suggested to avoid any differences if the phones for some reason connects to different masts)

I've noticed that when you close the app, it continues running in background.

It's useful when you stop the navigation and then you open it again, finds your location faster, but when you don't the app keeps consuming battery.

It would be a good idea to let the user choose if it keeps running background or completely close it.

Well thx but i fixed it myself.
Just removed the 3.07 version and reinstalled the 3.06 version.

Problem solved... Battery time fixed, OVI maps closing fixed.

Just by ONLY that one application removal.

Yes, people keeps forgetting that the whole point of a beta-phase is exactly to track down non-obvious bugs like this one.

Maybe the test suggested above should include a third phone with 3.06.
Remember that it too keeps some processes running (see post #24).

Is there any investigation going on to also determine whether the 3G radio gets locked by the"ghost" - as suggested in the initial post?
Anyway, this is the right spirit and everybody participating in these discussions should understand that this type of DIALOGUE, OPENNESS and CORDIALITY is what makes this forum effective. I have to admit that I was impressed myself with your (Nokia's developers) openness in sharing your feedback & testing procedures. Hat's off! We talked about this again with the testing team this morning. They are going to do some more digging. If you all notice anything in particular that could be a clue, let us know.

It may be completely unrelated to this stuff. I remember in one release we had maps crashing and it turned out to be a bug in a 3rd-party app which they fixed for us. These things are not always obvious or easy to figure out. Our Maps testers earn their keep!

Now I feel that this Ghost OVI maps icon is necessary and there is no harm when it remains open.. You can see the Map Icon only in Taskman.. Not in Open Apps after closing the map application.
and I feel that even the Messaging , Contacts, Log these applications are also remains open always.. They do not eat battery..

But yes.. It you see the satellite icon remain open on top right of screen then your phone might keep eating battery. But now I feel if the Map icon remains open in background then it becomes easy to open the map again.. in fact fast..

seriously I dont think it is eating battery after keeping it open.. I tested it for a week using all the things every day
