Swype 2.1 for Symbian

Beta (Likely to graduate to a commercial product.)

TRY THIS FIRST on any errors

2011-09-20 @ 20:09 by EskeRahn
This is a general thread to start on with various bugs.

    2012-03-04 As of today I will no longer try to assist on Swype for Symbian issues, as I neither have a Nokia Symbian phone, nor got access to one any more.

    2012-03-01 A note extra on BELLE and version 2.1. Some have reported that the old bug is back, that the phone needs to be set to English during language packs installations (see below)

    2012-02-10 A note on BELLE and version 2.1. Please note that numerous installation problems have been reported. A solution seems to be to clear everything (see below) and install on C: (sorry!!!) and do remember the reboots!!!
    And IGNORE it if the language pack installation gives an error, it seems to work after a boot, despite the error message!
    Thanks goes to torveja for this thread:
    http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-2-1-for-symbian/bugreport/48353/swype-language-pack-installation-on-n8-w-belle-works-only#comment-103585
    (And YES it is a known bug that there is a gap above the keyboard showing what is 'behind', no known remedy)

    2011-11-08 A note on version 2.1 and build numbers for language packs:
    Please note that in the Beta version of 2.1 the build number (the last part) for the language packs has reached a too high number (above max 32767), so they appear as either a negative number or zero depending on the context (zero during install and negative under installed apps). Just ignore that and proceed. This will be fixed in the live/store version.

In general if you want to upgrade using a different memory, I would recommend uninstalling the old version first, before installing the new.

Here are a general recipe including clean-up that have helped many with various bugs.
Please try this
    1) uninstall language packs and Swype
    2) Set PHONE-language to English. (not just writing language) (*)
    3) reboot (**)
    4) remove any residues of language packs and Swype on all drives e.g.
      e:\System\apps\Swype
      e:\System\apps\SwypeLanguagePack_Danish
    5) reinstall
    6) Set PHONE language back (*)
    7) reboot (**)

(*) With version 2.1 the two steps of changing the phone language should no longer be needed.
But in the transition 2.0 -> 2.1 you may need it to correctly get out of 2.0
(**) You SHOULD do the reboots, even if your phone-language IS English.

Some have reported better luck installing on C: (on the other hand, this prevented a common workaround on language-packs settings-issues on version 2.0, but this should no longer be relevant with 2.1)
This seems to be especially important on Belle, see above note

REMEMBER on language packs: Always use a version matching the Swype version. Working pairs here:
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-2-0/download_and_installation

.

ADDENDUM

Sometimes the above wont do it. This MIGHT be due to some residues that are blocking perhaps in the form of
    \Resource\gspluginswyperc.r*
    \Resource\apps\*swype*.*
    \Resource\apps\Install_0x200333DB.*
    \Resource\apps\UnInstall_0x200333DC.*
    \Resource\plugins\*swype*.*

on what ever drive swype has been installed. (check all to be sure)

If Swype has been installed on C: and files hang there the user can't remove these themselves without breaking warranty (needs to be 'rooted') other than by a complete reset of the phone.
You MIGHT have luck in getting rid of residues on C: by re-installing on C: and then uninstall it again., as the uninstall should do some clean-up.

If on a memory-card, turn the phone off, remove the battery, move the memory-card to a card-reader, and delete the above mentioned files that way. (and reinsert card and battery of course)

If on "Mass memory", you MIGHT follow the method in this link
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-2-0/suggestion/39892/ea...
But PLEASE go with caution on mass-storage-connection, as this may lead to a situation requiring other clean-up as described in my reply in that thread!!
(The last method would work for a memory-card as well, but I strongly recommend using a card-reader)

Best Regards
Eske Rahn

PS
The build in file-manager hides the files in
\resource
So you need something like x-plore
http://store.ovi.com/content/1912
to see them on the phone.

PPS
If your C: are getting filled, please see this thread, especially on 'invisible' MMS and emails that might even be orphaned on C:.
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/nokia-beta-labs/discussion/40711/hints-if-your-c-are-getting-low-on-free-space

PPPS
If you are installing on C: and it is getting low, you might also want to remove superfluous languages.
Please see this thread on that
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-brought-to-you-by-nokia/suggestion/19827/removal-of-unwanted-languages

I have 2 N8's, one of them had success with this method, the other not. Currently even installation of the official version from Ovi Store leads to error message. This might be due to an issue with the phone system though as the app manager shows less than 1/2 of installed apps even after restart. Should Anna be re-installed perhaps?

@suomu55
Nokia drop has some threads that might be related, on Anna-issues.
I'm no expert on those though. I only got a S60v5.

[EDIT rest of comment moved to main post]

Just for the record, this tip worked in my case:

Original installation:
- Swype 1 + Finnish & Swedish dictionaries (as downloadable from Ovi store)
- Phone language Finnish

Original upgrade method:
- Disable swype input method
- Reboot
- Install Swype from betalabs
- Reboot

Original upgrade results:
- Tapping a text area doesn't bring up any keyboard whatsoever
- Cannot access Swype settings
- After changing Phone language to English, could access settings, but while the Swype input method is selected, no keyboard appears on tapping a text area (e.g. in messaging)

Tried remedies (before the one suggested in this thread):
- Uninstall Swype 2, try to go back to Ovi store version, but the problem persists (no keyboard appears while Swype input method is selected)

Finally I tried this approach, which fixed the problem. Swype 2 with new Finnish/Swedish dictionaries seem to work ok now. On the downside, I lost my user dictionary from the previous version.

@RasmusP
Glad you got it working. :-)
And thank you for the detailed description, so we know what scenarios are related.

Sorry about the user-dictionary. It has been reported to be upgraded (when the upgrade works only of course)

Por favor, botones de hecho, cursor y opciones, más grandes! Son muy pequeños! Es lo único que tiene que mejorar!

Note the addition in the initial posting on the illegal build numbers on the language packs for the new version 2.1.

N97mini 0592616, 30.0.004, Swype 2.01(4426) with Danish dictionary v2.00(35420), Soundtracker 1.07(0) (for java 2.1), Drop 1.03(0) with QT 4.06(3), Gig Finder 2.00(1103)

The safest method to successfully install Swype and go from version 2.0 to version 2.1 is:
1. Completely uninstall version 2.0 and extra language packs
2. Reboot
3. Install version 2.1 and extra language packs
4. Reboot

Worked like a charm with my greek product-coded N8 with Swype and extra Greek language pack.

Thank you Swype! :)

I Tryed this:

-uninstalled
-set to english
-reboot
-remove the swype-Folder (e:\system\apps\swype)
direkt installing via betalabs - ovisuit (open with ovie suit) was'nt successfull therfore:

-download the files:

Swype_0x200333FD_v2.1.4435_SA_Sym3_NAM.sisx and

SwypeGermanDictionary_v2.0.35432.sisx

copy this files to phone memory, start the first file,this shows:

swype 2.01 xxxx !!!!! and then: installation failed

No way to install 2.1 - and why is it shown as 2.01????

Using N8 Symbian Anna

@waate
Well at least I can answer the least interesting part.
There are two different 'conventions' for showing version in Symbian.
They both consists of three parts. A major version, a minor version, and a build number.
In one format just combined with dots, like

2.1.4435

In the other with the minor version zero-padded to two digits, and with the build in parenthesis

2.01(4435)

(to add to the confusion not all Swypes installation files, reflects the actual number in the filename)

_

But to the more interesting question why it does not work, I'm somewhat puzzled.

Have you got a file manager like x-plore or similar installed? If not it can be found here http://store.nokia.com/content/1912

Please check if there are any Swype-'residues' not removed by the uninstall.
If so you MIGHT have luck by

Setting the PHONE language to English
reinstalling the old Swype 2.0 while in English, on the drive with the residues
Uninstall Swype 2.0 again
Reboot
Repeat for any drive with residues
Set the Phone language back

This should remove Swype residues.
Also remember that there can be a directory side by side with Swype for the language pack. And PLEASE check ALL drives for residues.

@EskeRahn:

I used x-plore....

Now it works - but I don't know why.

what I've done:

I copied both files to Memory Card and try it again - no success
I restart the phone - without success
I changed the language back to german (both, phone language and writing) - automtic restart of the phone --> I try it again and now it was successfull - swype is shown as 2.01 (4435)

I dont understand why - but I'm thinking, now its working fine ....

@waate
Great!
Could be that it was because the old installation of 2.0 was under German, and that the uninstall of this attempted by the 2.1 does not like the switch to English i suggested?
...I'm guessing here, but interesting observation. Thanks.
:)

at first I uninstalled, then I switched to english - like you wrote in the first post here...

I've used before 2.1 the 2.xx from betalabs but before v2.x from betalabs I tryed the version from ovi-Suite. But this version from ovis-suite was not usable without german language pack

Has anyone gotten the "update error" error? I deleted the Swype files but a few remain and I cannot delete them for some reason.

@EskeRahn
Thank you for the help. I guess a screwed myself because I jumped the gun and deleted the swype file. Now I cannot install even the basic swype. I will have to do some more searching to see what I can do. Thanks again.

@csmoove82
I would suggest:
1) find one with a similar phone, preferably without Swype, or with the version you had.
2) Install the version your phone had on the borrowed phone (if not there)
3) Attach both phones to a pc with NokiaSuite, and copy the missing files to your phone. At the drive it was installed in.
4) Try to uninstall from your phone, if not possible try to install it, and then uninstall.
5) Do a manual cleanup and a reboot.
6) Try to install the new version.

well that was a long shot no one has the phone. do you know all the files involved in swype? I have been using x plore to find what is left (found a few more) but I still get the update error.

EDITED:
Here is a dump of all files I think is part of installed Swype on my N97mini, (note this is including Danish)
http://cibmal.dk/Swype_Installed_ALL.zip

hey thanks a lot for the files. now I just need the actual exe file or something. Happy Hunting to me. Thanks again!

Edited above with more files....

sigh well I give up lol. I used another phone to attempt to install an earlier version, did not work. I went through majority of the files with x plore found some more files deleted them too. Guess I am still missing something. But once again I thank you. Now I have to figure with Ovi Maps 3.08 won't load. Says something about network problems.

@csmoove82
I would try copying in all the files from the (extended) zip above, and then see if that made you able to launch an installer (or uninstall).
If that works, follow by an uninstall with reboot, manual clean-up, and a clean install with reboot.

(I would recommend searching the maps forum on your load issue)

:)

I am not that tech savvy to do that ( I know it is more than a simple copy and paste). Any suggestions?

@csmoove82
No, it is somewhat technical to clean up once it goes wrong. Sorry.

well I thought it was going to be more difficult but I just flashed the phone with the original firmware. That did it. Still could not upgrade to 2.1 still getting update error sigh oh well. Thanks again for your help!

At the moment no problem at all, I installed 2.01 (1332), is the latest?
I uninstalled to make space as qt 4.7.3 28 June 2011 and other files reduce the C memory at less than 10mb (I hope Nokia will release soon new software update for S1 including these files) and found with Xplore that still the Italian language pack is there. Now I removed with Xplore, but if not I will not need to reinstall the package as it is still on memory?
Thanks Gianpiero Celano

iam gettin INSTALLATION OF SISX FILES NOT SUPPORTED my phn is nokia 5230 tried with nokia suite also but same.help..

@draghav50
Could you be out of space on C: it is a somewhat hungry app.
You can try install on memory card, there is performance penalty though / especially if the card is slow. But as a S60v5-phone it should work (I have tested install on SD on a N97Mini earlier)

@draghav50
It sound to me like it is very low. I do not know how much is needed DURING installation, but when the installation is done, it takes about 6Mb, follow links in original posting on how to save some of it

Moderator joined from Swype 2.1 for Symbian/Bug reports/explicit recommendation: set language to 'english' and restart whenever you think a restart won't hurt

Hi guys,

last week i installed Swype 2.1 on my N8 (OS pre-anna-PR1.2) on mass storage. Since the installation description said, the language change is not necessary anymore, i didn't change it from german to english. Before installation i restartet the phone, installed swype and german dictionary, and restarted again. Swype worked normal.
Furthermore i installed the betalabs Search App, and a few days later the N8 was absolutely unuseable... immediately after restart N8 hang, lagged... after many reading in internet the hardreset via volumedown-cam-menu-poweron was the last - very lossy - help.

Since 1 week my N8 is called Anna :D

Well, today i installed Swype 2.1 again, this time to C: drive.
At first restart, installed Swype, installed german dictionary, restart, and test... it was disappointing. Whether i set the feature 'first letter big' on or off, every first letter was big, in every word. And after a few words swyping (maximum 2 lines/about 20 words, i tried several times) the whole messaging app crashed (closed without saving the draft).

That was the moment, where i read first time in Discussions here on Betalabs.

the upshot...
I restartet phone with 8-sec-powerbutton, deinstalled german dictionary, deinstalled swype, restarted again... set phone language to english (phone restarts), installed Swype, restartet again, installed german dictionary, restarted again, set language to german (phone restarts again by itself)
Many restarts, right? i thought, a last restart by 8-sec-power won't hurt, so i also did that last one.

And... it works absolutely perfect since a few hours hardcore messaging :D
