I wanted to chime in and let you guys know what we've been up to over the last couple weeks.
Your feedback and support has been absolutely invaluable. We can't thank you enough for contributing your thoughts and putting up with an unstable version of Swype.
We've been hard at work to address all of the critical bugs raised here. We've also made a couple of small improvements that should make the whole experience from download, to install, to uninstall a whole lot easier.
With that said, an update to the Swype Beta will be available sometime in the next two weeks! Here's what you can expect:
- Complete overhaul to the install / uninstall experience. Install to either C: or your SD card without a problem (We still recommend you install to C).
- The Settings crash has been fixed
- Official Belle support
- Thai and Vietnamese language packs
- A bunch of small bug fixes thanks to our Beta testers
Thanks again for all of your support. If you have any questions feel free to ask them here. We'll provide some updates when we're closer to the next release.
Happy Swyping!
Peter @ Swype

Ghee this sounds nice. Good news! Thanks.
But just to be sure when you write
"either C: or your SD card"
I assume this also includes "Mass memory" on phones like N97Mini or N8 with three storages?

Eske Rahn
@eske: Of course. Installation to any location should work much better now. We do highly recommend you install your language packs in the same location as the Swype binary
@amit_anju and others:
I can clear up any questions about future language support.
We are absolutely thrilled that Swype for Symbian supports 37 languages right now. Symbian is also the only Swype platform that supports downloadable language packs! If we had it our way we would continue to bring additional languages to the Ovi store.
Unfortunately there are significant technical and business challenges that makes continued language development difficult and prohibitive. There are still many languages--such as Hindi--that are not yet supported by Swype both on Symbian and Android. There are also some languages that only work with the latest versions of Symbian Belle. There are definitely many roadblocks.
We're sorry to say there are no plans to expand our language support for Symbian besides what's going to be offered in this next update. If at any time we start working on additional languages, our Beta users will be the first ones to know and the first ones to try it out!
Best,
Peter
@swype
Phew, thought so. Allow me to recommend adjusting the original post, to avoid any further confusion on that.
e.g.:
"either C: or your SD card without a problem" ->
"any memory, even SD card, without a problem"
And yeah, I've always attempted that.
...even though the old version required manual deletion of the DOUBLED language files to do so. ;-p
(Hope this bug is among the fixed ones)

Always loved Swype. Only grouse was missing split screen support, now addressed by Swype 2. Dint fiddle wid d settings yet.
One query. Why does ovi store show update for Swype? As I understand, ovi has version 1 and this is version 2. Is it because this is beta version, and not released in ovi?
Thanks, very interested about testing (using) Thai and giving no value comment just to get notification about updates to this thread. :)
@rituraj_nokia
Not sure why the Ovi store may be showing an update. We've released several incremental updates via the Ovi store, but this is a big enough feature jump that it's aptly named Swype 2.0 for Symbian.
@rituraj_nokia, it's a bug of ovi store, it shows earlier versions of app as updates. It just checks if the version numbers are diffrnt
The new version of Swype 2.0 is much faster and reliable than its previous version 1.0, but Nokia guys should provide Split Screen features to S60v5 smartphones, because most of he Nokia users are still using S60v5 devices so the Split Screen features should given to them :) Thanks
@maxinumpan
The original post says
"With that said, an update to the Swype Beta will be available sometime in the next two weeks! Here's what you can expect:
.
.
- Thai and Vietnamese language packs
"
And that was almost a week ago, so within the next week or so it could be expected. :)

Great News. Good to hear, and I cant wait for the Update:)
You Guys do a great job, I will never buy a Phone without Swype-Support in the future, ist just amazing. Thanks
Hey Swypers!
Working out the final details now. We're only a few days so hold on there!
Cheers!
Peter
Well we get d update for d final version in d OVI store? (its still showing d update to version 1).
Also a suggestion for improving d OVI store, even though this is not d correct thread for it. Give us an option to ignore updates for apps we don't want to update, so dat they don't appear in d available updates thread once ignored. This can be implemented by providing a button for ignoring along with d button for updating.
Glad to hear there'll be an update regarding the install process because I coundn't get it working on N8 (italian)
Split screen support across the board, wherever there's text input - notes/ calendar/ sms/ email/ browser/ search - it's so useful! On an E7, I don't feel like opening the keyboard, because swype is so handy for keying in short messages or a few words/ letters. I prefer typing on the qwerty physical keybrd for the longer emails and sms, but the split screen swype is perfect! thank you guys!
@k.rayker
Sorry, they cant do that. Please see this thread
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-2-0/bugreport/39726/in-...
@EskeRahn,
..oops, looks like I jumped the gun! I can only use swype on a few of it - however, I'll take whatever that's improved as a positive!
great stuff, but i'm polish and i have a suggestion of minor improvement. In Polish language, there should be something easy to access, for example second press of button "=#@"; which would show letters such as ż,ź,ą,ę,ć,ś; cause pressing for example "a" for a while is annoying.
I personally had to uninstall 2.01.1332 restart install 2.01.4435 restart in order to get the new version on the phone.
Dear Developers,
We were expecting Hindi/Devanagari language support in this version.
If it's too difficult for you guys to code the swyping process for Hindi words, I suggest you to atleast make a non-swypable keyboard for Hindi/Devanagari characters.
Because curretly Symbian ^3/Anna/Belle lacks any kind of keyboard for Devanagari, it's impossible to type in our mother tongues on our beloved smartphones.
Please consider about Hindi.
@Abz_dogg
It ought to work. Try this:
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-2-0/discussion/39904/tr...
Can not get Danish language installed, settings will not open, tried the q button but it crashes when I select Danish
@hautho13
Det burde ellers virke uden problemer, det gør det for mig. :)
Well we better do this in English:
This problem was well known with 2.0 and has been fixed with 2.1. But during upgrade you might not get rid of it. So please do a complete uninstall, and then install 2.1
See this for details:

Nu har jeg fået det til at virke ;-)
It works fine now, It was the language pack that was the problem, Swype suggests that you should download the language pack from ovistore instead off from betalabs
my fault...........sorry
Nah, it's Swypes fault not yours when it suggests to download an incorrect version, and installs it without checking for (in)compatibility. IMHO.
Men fedt at det virker nu. ;)
Wow thanks for the update. I had uninstalled swype after the wifi password issue. Been using the default keyboard made me craved for swype update release. Missing swype so much, love it a lot :-*
Pls do add in tamil language support as well. Thanks@நன்றி.
@tristanpualao
Simply mark the word and press the Swype key to remove from user directory.
A lot of tips can be found here: http://www.swype.com/category/tips/
(A few is valid for Android only though)
But there is (currently?) no way of getting rid of or barring words that comes with Swype.
@EskeRahn
doesn't work on my nokia n8, tapping the swype key only shows word choices..no option for deleting..
@tristanpualao
What you describe is the behaviour for words in the dictionary that comes with each Swype-language. As I pointed out you can (unfortunately) only delete words you have added yourself.
But remember that Swype tries to be clever and register what you selected, so if you have several words that matches your Swype pattern (like "PUT" and "PIT", "POT"), selecting the one you really wants multiple times, should bring that one to the top of the list as the word selected automatically. I do not know the number of times needed, and it might depend on the frequency of the word in standard texts ("PUT" of course being by far the most common of the above three in English)
(In Danish we got "PYT", "PUT" and "POT", none of them very common, and here the above described way to promote one works instantly)
Thanks for Vietnamese update. However this Vietnamese version lacks letter "đ" available on the keypad.
Moreover, this new Swype sometimes causes problem when we type password for WLAN.
Thanks for your noticing my comments.
Very useful app.. landscape view only supports full screen keyboard in my c6-00, but in the options to select input method, there is an option of mini keyboard too.. i think this is a bug... and a mini split screen keyboard for landscape view too would be much appreciated. all the best!!
@nguyentongduc
The pop-up issue is a known bug:
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-2-1-for-symbian/bugreport/44997/pop...
@Debangshu_Kumar
The odd and confusing options for keyboard selects are inherited from the underlying standard system, and are thus out of Swypes control. I too see this as a bug (at the very least it could be called inappropriate).
See the answer I got on this almost a year ago:
http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-for-symbian-brought-to-you-by-nokia...
OMG !! I've just downloaded it ,, and it's Totally Amazing ,, way beyond what i've Expected..... I mean the ''split screen" itself is a Huge leap ,, not to mention the "Faster performance" , the "improved accuracy" ,, and the Overall much Appreciated "Smoothness" to the whole Swyping experience ... Especially the long awaited support for "Arabic" language.
Great Job Nokia ,, Great job Swype team ,, i'm officially BLOWN away ! ,, so please guys : keep up the Amazing work .
By the way i'm using a C7 ,, and writing this very comment with this new version took me less than "2 minutes" .. So WOW Man , I rest my case !!
The latest version works like charm. I really like it . Will comment if there, is any issues. Posted using Swype ;)
I only wish the bottom most 4 keys in portrait mode were a bit more larger. Very difficult to get the green check mark at the bottom in portrait mode.
Does anybody know how to fix Swype within IMO after installing Beta Labs apps ('Store QML Client' and 'Live View') breaks it?
Should i download this version for my N8 (belle). Or should i download from Store. The version on Store is 1.1.
@albin166
I downloaded this version from beta labs last night and it's working as well as it did with Anna.
Is the double tap feature working for you? For me its not working in Belle. & there are others too who are facing this issue.
its depending if the app uses split screen text input or not. in every app which uses split screen, you can't double tap to select a word. in apps which don't use split screen,all works fine
This issue was present in Qt 4.7.4 earlier version. In qt apps, the Swype behaved inconsistently. Cursor being stuck etc.
In the latest qt version, this problem has been fixed.
You could just install Nokia pulse, the smart installer will install the fixed qt version automatically
Dont think thats true, because latest QT is integrated in Belle Firmware. Furtermore there a so many users having this issue...
I had this issue. And it got fixed after installing latest qt version with pulse.
The qt version coming with Belle is the old 4.7.4
there's a more recent qt quick version that fixes the problem
When Swpye coming with Belle is activated, it slows down the processing speed of my phone - Nokia N8.
Dear Swype,
I just wanted to thank your entire team and also the beta testers. I am so proud using Symbian now. The word "type" has already replaced to "swype" in my dictionary. :D
I wish swype should be made exclusive to Symbian only. The best thing to compete with the rivals and boast ourselves :P:P
In today's busy living I see ppl around me typing in their mobile phones and most of the time they make typos and retype and retype LOL then I feel proud to take my mobile from my pocket and swype in front of them.
Cheers!!
than you again.
swype made my life easy.
@aqther
A few months ago it could have been me writing that message, now all I see is a buggy app and no updates since the beginning of November.
This isn't a rant, I just wanted to consolidate the problems I've had with Swype recently:
• double-tap word selection not working
• backspace not working (or holding backspace for word delete)
• every word gets capitalised
• split-screen not working consistently
• multi-line input not available in some apps
• input is sometimes right-aligned
• buttons along bottom (tick, left/right, options) are too small
• doesn't have text selection anchors like native Belle input
For such an amazing and useful app it's surprising how many niggly problems aren't picked up in testing.
I don't see a single bug. Works super. The only think I did not like in the previous release was no 'split screen' but even then I enjoyed using it and now it really rocks!!
@mattleech may be you need to re-install your OS? that might help.
I keep running into an issue when trying to use Swype to enter text into a pop up dialog box, ex. When entering a wpa pass phrase for a wireless connection. This mostly happens in portrait mode. I usually have to turn Swype input off as the dialog box blocks the Swype predictive text box. Is there a way to set the focus of the Swype text box to always be on top of other pop up windows? Anyone else see this issue?
@gringorican0
It's a known problem: http://betalabs.nokia.com/apps/swype-2-1-for-symbian/bugreport/44997/pop...
when only there will be a newer version of Swype to fix all this bug and integrate properly into Belle?
So many bugs with this. If this was Nokia's app it would have been fixed already.
Hopefully they say something soon. I've seen swype on my friends and droid and saw something I hope they bring to this version soon.
Im not sure if Betalabs is going to answer, as they say "This will be our last release to Beta before graduating to the Ovi store, so test it out and let us know what you think about Swype 2.1 for Symbian."
Sad thing is, the version on Ovi store is much older.
I think we might be better off telling Swype directly on their forums. & hope that they take notice & do something about it.
1 link that i found for Swype forums:
http://forum.swype.com/forumdisplay.php?55-Bug-Reports
I remember one of the first tips that Swype gave was to swype out your message without making corrections and then go back and correct them afterwards.
This used to be a good tip until double-tapping of words to select and correct them stopped working. Now selecting words on a small screen such as the C6-01 is too frustrating for words, the N8 is a little better with its larger screen but even on the N8 I have difficulty tapping the buttons on the bottom row.
Come on Nokia and Swype, let's have a new release in time for us getting the 808!
Cheers!
Matt
when will be the day that we see this in our Symbians?
A fresh new look
Cleaner, simpler, and even more intuitive!
A Living Learning Keyboard
Swype builds your personal language model to fit your input style! It's a 'living keyboard': the more you use Swype, the more accurate it gets!
Next Word Prediction
With Advanced Language Modeling, Swype has the ability to predict your next word.
Default dictionary editing
You asked for it, you got it! Swype Beta users can now suppress words in Swype's default dictionary!
Multimodal Keyboard
With added Handwriting support, Swype is the only multimodal keyboard: Swype, Type, Write or Speak, all in the same package!
Voice & Text Dictionary Sync
With Dragon Dictation integrated, Swype can share words you add to your personal dictionary across speech and text.
Sadly, maybe never. But i really hope they prove me wrong.
I don't even want all the features like Voice & Text Dictionary Sync etc. Just want the basic software to work fine.
C'mon Beta labs team. Give us something to cheer.
@mattleech in comment #77
Discovered yesterday that you don't need to double-tap to select a word to bring up the word selection box, instead you tap the word to be corrected which places the cursor anywhere in the word and then tap the Swype key. This selects the whole word for replacement and the word selection box appears.
Happy days :)
I wonder why Nokia or Swype never told me this in any of the bug lists I reported?
Based on...
• No Swype release for Nokia phones since the beta in Nov 2011
• No replies or actions to any forum posts from Swype staff (so it's hardly surprising that people have stopped posting)
• Support requests, tweets, emails are all ignored
...I'm guessing that we're not going to see a new version of Swype for Belle FP1 and the 808.
@mattleech in many comments. Thanks for your help and input. You've been posting everything that I wanted to report, and now your post #80 has happily given me a way to do corrections. But I'm tempted to go back to the non-Beta version of swype that only uses a full screen. this one is unusable (your #66).
White 808 arrived yesterday, called her Purdy, she's beautiful :)
Firmware is 112.020.0310. Swype beta 2.01(4435) installed ok and is working exactly as it did on Nancy (N8).
Teaching Purdy all my special words now...
Congrats for the new unicorn 808, Matt. Hope you will share your stunning pics with us :)
Btw, i simply call my N8 "Nate"
Im guessing the double tap is still not working on 808 PV.
Also, did u try to move the swype dictionary database from the N8 to 808?
I rebuilt my phone last week. My biggest concern was that i would have to add all my words & shortforms back into swype.
So i looked around & found the database.
Go to "E:\System\apps\swype"
(I had it installed on E:. If you have it installed on any other drive, then just replace E: with C: or F:)
Now copy "UserData.udb" file
Paste somewhere in E: root or in F:. Just to be safe, you can that onto your PC.
After flashing the phone i installed Swype on C:
Navigated to "C:\System\apps\swype"
Replaced the "UserData.udb" file with the earlier copied file.
And, it worked :) Got all my words on the newly flashed phone.
Hope the same db works on a different phone too.
Note to other users: You will need a third party app like "X-plore" to access the system files. I would not recommend doing this if you dont know what you are doing.
Also, you will need to close Swype to copy the "UserData.udb" file.
Hope this helps someone.
@albin166 that's a great tip, cheers! I've already taught Purdy all my special words and passwords so there's no need for me to do this but I will be backing up that file now.
I'm still making a few Swypeos due to the larger screen but I'm finding Swype a lot more responsive here than on Nancy (N8). Re double-tapping, you did see my comment (#77) above didn't you? To select a word, tap the word once and then tap the Swype key. If the required replacement word isn't in the selection box then you can hit backspace and Swype a new word.
Cheers!
I have the 808 as well, and it really improves Swype usage. I am sad to say I have to agree, if they were going to do any more development or give us any more updates then we would have heard something by now. I doubt they are focusing on anything but Android development - but it would have been nice to be told either way. The silence is far more frustrating.
using v2.01(4435) (listed here as v2.1(4435!)
nothing has improved. They released a new beta for Android phones recently, which was wonderful...
So boring to have still this old version which is not really compatible with Belle. Biggest bug is the missing double tap feature to edit a word
Things are going from bad to worse it seems. I installed the Belle Refresh and am having more problems with Swype.
The bugs in 2.01 (called 2.1 here but installed as 2.01) are well known - gap below text input window, full screen on some apps, no double click to select a word, crashing. And this is the so-called beta!
Now with Belle Refresh (update to Belle for N8 etc) are new bugs. For example:
- occasionally it works fine, but mostly I get only capitalised words, which are also underlined to indicate they are "active", but active in what way is not clear.
- often cannot use the cursor key or the backspace/erase key as I get kicked out of the texting window.
These bugs may be due to the apps in use. Anyone else notice a pattern? Anyone else care.
See #22 for the last Swype staff comment (2011.11.02)
Anyone know an alternative to Swype? I tried using the Nokia Store version and it doesn't work on the N8 (still) it seems. I got the N8 because of Swype, and gave up the hard keypad of the e7.
I might have to sell my 808 as I couldn't use it without Swype, the normal Nokia keyboard is the worst of any phone on the market. Between that and killing Nokia Messaging they really are making it hard to consider Symbian. Talk about shot in the head. What a waste, they are announcing a "Pureview" WP8 tomorrow with 8MP, what a load of shite.
The only alternative is a bluetooth keyboard. Which I use older Nokia phones and Using a bluetooth keyboard on S^3 is just wonderful.
Time to ditch Swype. I've just discovered that Belle FP2 supports multi-touch! ...and the word prediction is fab!!
I still think Swype is faster and easier for one handed use. Does it change the appearance or functionality of Swype with FP2? Is the word choice bar now horizontal like in the updated keyboard?
And I have to admit that something with Swype has improved. Maybe an app was deleted or an update happened but Swype is working great again on email and text. But it still doesn't select whole words.
I found that many apps did not move their input area when the Swype keyboard popped up meaning the keyboard obscured the text being input.
